Roland Michener Secondary School and Lakeside Outreach are located in the town of Slave Lake in northern Alberta, in the Municipal District of Lesser Slave River. It is located 257 km north of Edmonton on the southeast shore of Lesser Slave Lake at the junction of Highway 2 and Highway 88.
Roland Michener Secondary School offers full academic and special education programs in an effort to foster hope and to inspire success among our 550 students in Grades 7 to 12. A wide range of CTS options are also available for students to take, including Art, Drama and Instrumental Music.
Job Purpose
Career Coaches will foster an environment of high expectations and lifelong learning, and will encourage students to always work to their full potential. Career Coaches will engage secondary students in the development and implementation of their transition plans. A student’s individual transition plan may include high school programing, post-secondary and career planning. This will be done through a student centered approach, focusing on exploration, and engaging a student’s support system in the process whenever possible.
Duties And Responsibilities

Through The Following Activities, Career Coaches Will Endeavor To
- Support the unique career development journey of secondary students, ensuring that all students are confident in the next steps of their transition plan.
- Instill a sense of hope and confidence in students as they progress into the next step of their career journey.
- Increase graduation rates and transition to post-secondary rates among all students in High Prairie School Division.
- Create opportunities for students to explore their interests and values as they pertain to career planning.
Student Career Planning
- Provide every secondary student with regular ongoing career development discussions about the student’s career needs, interests and goals.
- Encourage regular self-assessment and continuous career research through My Blueprint and other tools.
Career Awareness and Exploration
- Support the provision of opportunities for students to be exposed to a wide range of occupations and career clusters.
Academic Planning and School Success
- Work closely with students to help them develop a high school plan that creates opportunity and individual success.
- Guide students to align their high school plan with the requirements of a high school diploma (or certificate) and of their future aspirations.
- Collaborate with administrators, teachers, Indigenous Success Coaches and Wellness Coaches to deliver wrap around support for students.
Dual Credit Support
- Promote dual credit courses and programs to students and parents as a means for students to explore interests.
- Coordinate dual credit applications, screening interviews, orientations and textbooks.
- Provide front line support to dual credit students; liaise with dual credit instructors and teachers (Grad Coach) to support student success.
- In consultation with a certified teacher (Grad Coach) ensure dual credit marks are submitted to Alberta Education.
Transition to Post-Secondary
- Provide opportunities for students to be exposed to a wide range of post-secondary institutions and programs.
- Coach students in research of post-secondary programs and through the post-secondary application process.
Off Campus Education
- Promote the Registered Apprenticeship Program.
- Work closely with Off Campus Coordinator to support students in the Registered Apprenticeship Program.
Career Education Support for Teachers
- Provide teachers with training in My Blueprint (High School Planner).
- Provide teachers with resources to support lesson plans for career education.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent is required
- Post-secondary degree, diploma, or certificates in related field is preferred but not required
- 1-3 years’ experience working in related field is preferred
- Valid Driver’s License as travel is required
