Job description

The Division of Cardiology at the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre (PMCC), University Health Network (UHN), a University of Toronto (U of T) academic health science centre, is seeking a qualified full-time Clinical Academic Cardiologist with expertise in Artificial Intelligence (AI). The successful candidate would fulfil the academic position description of Clinician Scientist and must be eligible for a full-time clinical (MD) or status-only academic appointment within the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, U of T, at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor. Applications will be accepted until July 1, 2025, or until the position is filled. The position start date is Sept 1, 2025, or a mutually agreed upon date.

As a clinical Scientist, the successful candidate must have an established record of accomplishment in AI and would be expected to focus approximately 70% of their time developing and implementing AI algorithms. The candidate will have appropriate experience or formal training in AI, with a Master’s or PhD preferred, such that they will be able to develop and maintain a research platform in AI. This role will require experience in the development of new AI technologies and novel research methodologies. The successful candidate will be a member of the PMCC AI Team and will leverage the significant digital assets and infrastructure that have been established in the PMCC and at UHN. Preference will be given to applicants with a research focus aligned with PMCC priority areas such as heart valve, coronary and aortic diseases, and heart function.

The clinical position involves coverage of the in-patient Cardiology service, and outpatient management of cardiology patients is expected. Academic excellence will be measured by peer review of the successful development, production and execution of basic or clinical outcomes based/trial research, evidence of practice and/or equipment innovations, peer-reviewed publications, invitations to significant conferences and speaking engagements, and accolades. The successful applicant must show independent academic work in AI and is expected to advance AI scholarship.

The successful candidate will report to the Division Director of Cardiology at UHN/Sinai Health System. Candidates must hold an MD degree or equivalent and should have, or be eligible for, certification in Cardiology by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO). The primary language of work will be English. Compensation will be in the usual range for an experienced academic Cardiologist in the Province of Ontario, commensurate with qualifications and experience. Additional sources of income from Alternate Funding Plans (AFPs) and merit awards from the Department of Medicine, and from the PMCC may be available. Health benefit options and plans are supplied per institutional policy. In addition, the candidate will be reimbursed for partial start-up costs for office expenses.

The primary goal of this recruitment is to participate and enrich educational and scholarly achievements in AI; maintain excellence in patient care, teaching, and research, with innovative research that improves the lives of patients.

Interested applicants should send a cover letter, a copy of their curriculum vitae and the name and contact information of three referees to:

Dr. Heather Ross
Director, Division of Cardiology, UHN/SHS
c/o Tiffany La
Email: tiffany.la@uhn.ca

Applications will be accepted until July 1, 2025 or until the position is filled.
