Job summary

The Government of Nova Scotia’s Marine Services division within the Department of Public Works is recruiting for full-time roles on the Tancook Island Ferry, with duties spanning Captain, Mate, Engineer and Deckhand as needed to maintain ferry operations.

Expect to work across shifts on a 80 hours biweekly schedule. Rewards include a competitive pension, benefits, and ongoing training in a coastal service environment.

Qualifications

• Grade 12 or equivalent.
• Master certificate and Domestic 500 gross tonnage required; four years seafaring experience.
• Marine Emergency Duties and essential medical/certificates required.
• Engineer certificate (SVMO) is an asset.

Responsibilities

• Captain: operate, navigate, and ensure safety and adherence to marine procedures.
• Engineer: maintain propulsion, mechanical, electrical, and auxiliary systems.
• Mate: oversee loading/unloading and deck operations; assist operations.
• Deckhand: assist berthing, handling, and maintenance; support engineer and vessel readiness.
