Job summary

Northumberland Ferries Limited is seeking an Exempt Captain, Non-Union, to command vessels operating from Wood Islands, PEI and Caribou, NS. The role focuses on Safe Navigation, ship handling, and ISM compliance, ensuring safe operations and crew performance.

The successful candidate will lead the ship's safety culture, maintain training records, and conduct regular toolbox talks and safety meetings to promote a bias toward proactive risk management.

Qualifications

• Requires Master, Near Coastal Certificate of Competency or higher.
• Continued Proficiency Endorsement required.
• Seafarers Medical Certificate required.
• Radio Operator Certificate required.
• STCW Basic Safety, Survival Craft and Rescue Boats certificates required.
• Discharge Book (Continuous Certificate of Discharge) kept current.
• Specialized Passenger Safety Management certification desirable.

Responsibilities

• Ensure Safe Navigation and ship handling for docking/undocking on multiple vessels daily.
• Implement the Company’s Management System as per ISM Code aboard the vessel.
• Maintain current training and crew certifications.
• Lead a culture of safety, reporting hazards and accidents and implementing corrective actions.
• Execute daily toolbox talks and monthly health and safety meetings.
• Ensure crew compliance with safe working practices and procedures.

Northumberland Ferries Limited, regional leader in thetransportation industry, is seeking an Exempt Captain, Non-Union, to workonboard our vessels that operate from the ports of Wood Islands, PE, andCaribou, NS. The Exempt Captain will be responsible for the SafeNavigation, and the ship handling of the vessel for the docking and undockingmultiple times daily. The Captain has overall responsibility to implementthe Company’s Management System as per the ISM Code on board the ship that isunder their command.

Education, Experienceand Certification:

The ideal candidate will have experience in navigatingRo-Pax vessels in confined or narrow water ways and in shallow water.Experience with Azimuth thrusters, Controllable Pitch Propellers and BeckerFlap Rudders is an asset.

Key Accountabilities: Specific Management Systemresponsibilities include:

• Implementingthe Safety and Environmental Protection Policy.
• Motivatingthe crew to observe and execute the policy.
• Issuingappropriate orders and instructions clearly and simply.
• Regularlyreviewing and updating the Company’s Management System and reportingdeficiencies to shore-based management.
• Reportinghazardous occurrences and accidents and ensuring measures to preventreoccurrence are identified and implemented.
• Ensuringcrew compliance with safe working practices and procedures.
• Conductingmonthly health and safety meetings.
• ConductingDaily Toolbox Talks with crew.
• Encouragingcrew to report near-misses by supporting a culture that does not focus onblame.
• Performingrisk assessments and job hazard analyses to ensure safe shipboardoperating practices and procedures are in place.
• Maintaincurrent records of training and crew certifications.
• Demonstratea commitment to maintaining a just-cause safety culture.
