Canada) Senior Applied Scientist (Contract)

Project Description :

The main goal is to find candidates who have previous experience working on cross-functional teams to identify the right problems to solve, prioritize those problems, identify success metrics, create a research plan, set up and run experiments, and communicate results with the cross-functional team and leadership. Candidates should also have experience with product analytics and working with UXR teams to investigate the effectiveness of their solutions post-release.

Experience with Python is required, as well as experience working on production-level systems alongside product teams. Candidates should have experience working with a cloud compute provider (AWS, GCP, Azure), with a preference for AWS experience.

Thomson Reuters Labs in Toronto is seeking scientists with a passion for solving problems using state-of-the-art Information Retrieval, Natural Language Processing, and Machine Learning.

About the role :

  • Experiment and Develop : Drive the end-to-end model development lifecycle, championing best practices for reproducible research and software delivery.
  • Collaborate : Work on a collaborative cross-functional team, sharing information and valuing diverse ideas.
  • Deliver : Translate complex business problems into projects with clearly defined scope, ensuring timely deliverables.
  • Innovate : Try new approaches and learn new technologies to solve real-world challenges.
  • Inspire : Communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical audiences.

Minimum Qualifications :

  • PhD in a relevant discipline or Master with comparable experience.
  • At least 5 years of practical experience building NLP / IR / ML systems from ideation to production.
  • Solid software engineering skills for prototyping.
  • Professional experience as a technical leader, coordinating and guiding the work of others.

Preferred Qualifications :

  • 8 years of practical experience building IR, ML, or NLP systems.
  • Ability to translate cutting-edge research into working prototypes.
  • Experience in fast-paced, agile environments.
  • Outstanding communication skills and data-driven decision-making.
  • Proficiency in Python, Java, or Scala.
  • Publications at relevant venues such as ACL, EMNLP, NAACL, NeurIPS, ICLR, SIGIR, KDD or similar.
