Founded in 1918, CNIB is one of Canada's oldest charities. For more than 60 years, CNIB Lake Joe has been providing exciting, safe, and accessible camp experiences for Canadians with sight loss. CNIB Lake Joe is looking for a Camp Counsellor, Watersports to help us bring the magic of summer camp to life for ‘kids of all ages' with sight loss, and their families!

Your Impact at CNIB:

  • Energetically and inclusively facilitate and support watersports programming, as assigned, and adapt programs so that they are accessible for all participants.
  • Ensure guest safety by adhering to CNIB Lake Joe Waterfront procedures, and the standards of the Water Ski and Wakeboard Ontario (WSWO), Ontario Camping Association (OCA) and Public Health.
  • Set up the program area and ensure that all required equipment and materials are available. Clean up the program after the program is completed. Report any low materials or issues with equipment to the appropriate Section Head.
  • Fill out the daily opening and closing logs for the watersports and vessel safety checks and ensure that all safety equipment is present and in working order.
  • On a rotational basis, be part of the Emergency Response Team, which includes being on call, present on site and available to respond to emergencies.
  • During youth weeks: Camp counsellors will be responsible for the health and safety of campers while in our care. This will include being on call (on rotation) overnight within the cabin in case of emergencies. Camp counsellors will be assigned to a camper group and as a team, will be responsible for ensuring the overall mental, physical and emotional well-being of campers.
  • During the spring season: Setting up program areas and ensuring that all required resources are available and helping with small maintenance tasks.

Requirements:

Who you are:

  • PCO (Pleasure Craft Operator) card with experience operating a wakeboat and/or powerboat
  • Current swimming certification an asset (Bronze Medallion and above)
  • Current (within 6 months of start date) Vulnerable Sector Police Record Check
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR "C"
  • Small Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP) an asset
  • National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) Water Ski and Wakeboard Foundations certification, or willingness to complete an asset

Experience and Qualifications:

  • Experience in camp or other recreation programs
  • Experience participating in and/or coaching watersports (water ski, wakeboard, wake surf) an asset
  • Strong interpersonal skills including patience and communication
  • Experience and knowledge of teambuilding, initiative tasks and leadership skill programming
  • Willingness to be cross-discipline trained on facilitating active living/adventure programs
  • Ability to work flexible hours in a changing and busy environment and work outside for extended periods. Degree or diploma in related field, or equivalent work experience
  • Personal or professional experience relating to blindness and sight loss is considered an asset
  • Personal or professional experience working with assistive technology and/or accessible environments is considered an asset

Work Environment:

  • Outdoor work required, including exposure to weather, sun, and heat. May require moderate physical exertion.
  • Respects confidentiality and works as part of a team or independently.
  • May require occasional overtime or flexible hours.
  • Ability to work outdoors for extended periods and in a dynamic environment. Accommodation available at CNIB Lake Joe during operational season, sharing accommodations with staff.
