The opportunity
An exciting opportunity exists in our Supply Chain department within the Oil, Gas, and Power division for a Buyer (18-month term) located in Calgary, Alberta. The purpose of this position is to source and procure goods and services for Sherritt’s nickel mining operations in Moa, Cuba, as well as the Oil & Gas and Power business units in Cuba.

In this role, you will be accountable for:

  • Conducting sourcing and purchasing activities in accordance with approved policies and procedures, managing the entire Purchase Order and contract lifecycle. This includes RFx preparation, evaluation, negotiation, and execution.
  • Preparing and negotiating supply agreements, while managing ongoing contracts to ensure compliance and performance.
  • Managing supplier relationships and performance, including supplier prequalification, onboarding, and conducting Supplier Relationship Management (SRM) to enhance quality and delivery.
  • Collaborating with internal stakeholders to identify and meet operational needs, resolve discrepancies, and provide timely, accurate updates on order status.
  • Supporting data analysis, invoice audits, and spend analytics, while identifying Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) opportunities and driving process improvements.
  • Ensuring compliance with legal, regulatory, and company policies, and maintaining accurate documentation throughout all commercial activities.
  • Participating in cross-functional teams to resolve issues effectively and fostering collaboration with key stakeholders, including JV partners, suppliers, government agencies, and customers.
  • Overseeing and supporting the expediting process, ensuring critical delivery timelines are met and recommending improvements to optimize departmental performance and key performance indicators (KPIs).
Skills and attributes for success:
  • Post-secondary degree or professional designation in Supply Chain Management or a related field, or a minimum of 5 years of equivalent experience.
  • A minimum of 3 years purchasing experience in the Oil & Gas or Power Generation industry.
  • Experience in the Mining industry is a necessity.
  • Strong knowledge of supply chain management, strategic sourcing, procurement processes, and market conditions.
  • Proficient in contract law and contracting best practices with the ability to draft and manage agreements.
  • Excellent communication skills, including report writing and the ability to convey complex information clearly.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office and other relevant software.
  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and solve problems effectively.
  • Fluency in both English and Spanish is required.
