Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Business Operations Generalist, Finance & Accounting based in Canada.

This is an opportunity to take ownership of the financial and operational foundations of a fast-growing, AI-driven business. Working directly with senior leadership, you will oversee essential accounting activities while supporting a broad range of business operations, including contracts, procurement, tax coordination, insurance, and corporate administration. You will help ensure financial accuracy, maintain reliable records, and keep critical obligations on schedule. Beyond recurring accounting tasks, you will investigate operational challenges, coordinate with external specialists, and improve processes across the organization. The role is suited to someone with a strong accounting foundation who enjoys variety, autonomy, and hands‑on problem‑solving. As the business grows, you will have the opportunity to expand your responsibilities and take ownership of increasingly complex operational initiatives.

Accountabilities
  • Accounting operations: Review and validate invoices, collect vendor documentation, coordinate internal approvals, and ensure payments are accurate and scheduled on time.

  • Month‑end close: Coordinate month‑end activities with external accountants, maintain close documentation, provide supporting information, investigate discrepancies, and flag unusual transactions.

  • Tax coordination: Manage the coordination of tax filings, registrations, notices, and year‑end reporting with external accounting and tax providers.

  • Financial systems: Maintain and organize financial platforms and tools, including Stripe, Subscript, Hubifi, and QuickBooks, adapting processes as business needs evolve.

  • Contracts and procurement: Coordinate contract reviews and agreements with internal stakeholders and external legal counsel, negotiate vendor terms, and track contractual commitments, renewals, and deadlines.

  • Corporate operations: Oversee insurance renewals, routine equity administration, corporate records, registrations, and incoming legal or administrative notices.

  • Process improvement: Document recurring operational activities, establish clear ownership and deadlines, and identify opportunities to automate repetitive tasks in collaboration with internal teams.

  • Vendor and stakeholder coordination: Work with accountants, lawyers, insurance brokers, vendors, and internal teams to ensure requests are addressed and outstanding matters are resolved.

  • Operational problem‑solving: Investigate unexpected charges, discrepancies, broken processes, and unfamiliar issues, using sound judgment to determine the appropriate next steps or involve specialists when needed.

  • Business support: Take ownership of both recurring responsibilities and unexpected operational challenges, ensuring that tasks are followed through to completion.

  • Continuous improvement: Use data, AI tools, and automation to make financial and business operations more efficient, accurate, and reliable.

Requirements
  • Experience in accounting, finance operations, or business operations with meaningful responsibility for financial processes.

  • Relevant backgrounds may include accounting or finance operations in a fast‑growing startup, public accounting with exposure to startup clients, or broader business operations roles involving payments, contracts, compliance coordination, or financial systems.

  • Solid understanding of invoices, accruals, reconciliations, and month‑end close processes.

  • Strong spreadsheet skills and the ability to work accurately with financial information.

  • Familiarity with accounting and business tools such as QuickBooks, Stripe, Brex, Carta, or comparable platforms.

  • Meticulous attention to detail when managing money, financial records, confidential information, and time‑sensitive obligations.

  • Strong investigative and analytical skills, with the ability to identify discrepancies, understand unfamiliar issues, and deliver clear answers.

  • Excellent organizational and follow‑through skills, particularly when coordinating several stakeholders or external service providers.

  • Sound judgment and the ability to make decisions independently while recognizing when specialist guidance or escalation is necessary.

  • Comfort learning unfamiliar systems, navigating ambiguity, and taking a hands‑on approach to solving operational problems.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to raise issues early and provide sufficient context to support timely decisions.

  • Interest in applying an accounting foundation across a broader business operations role, with the flexibility to take on responsibilities beyond traditional finance.

  • Willingness to use AI tools, data, and automation to improve operational workflows.

  • Ability to handle confidential financial, employee, and corporate information with discretion.

  • Willingness to work in a demanding, fast‑paced environment, with an expected workload of approximately 60-70 hours per week.

Benefits
  • Total compensation ranging from USD/CAD 100,000-170,000, including base salary and equity, depending on experience. The source does not specify the currency denomination of the compensation range.

  • Fully remote working arrangement, available to candidates based in the United States or Canada.

  • Regular in‑person team gatherings.

  • Direct collaboration with senior leadership and exposure to company‑wide business decisions.

  • Opportunity to take ownership of a broad range of finance, accounting, legal coordination, procurement, and corporate operations activities.

  • Scope for professional growth and increasing responsibility as the business expands.
