BUS DRIVERS

On-call positions available.

If you enjoy working with children and like driving, a career as a Bus Driver could be what you are looking for. Having the ability to make the children feel comfortable is just as important as knowing how to drive the bus. As a Bus Driver, you will become an important person in these school children’s lives, ensuring they get to and from school safely. A Bus Driver usually works early in the morning and late in the afternoon with a long break in-between. There is also the option of driving for field trips or other school activities for extra hours. This career is ideal if you prefer not to work evenings or weekends, plus you get winter, spring, and summer breaks off.

About The District…

The Sooke School District is the fastest growing on Vancouver Island and one of the fastest in British Columbia, employing approximately 1,800 staff and serving over 12,000 students. The District operates in five municipalities: Langford, Colwood, Metchosin, Sooke, and the Highlands. We acknowledge the nations on whose lands our schools are built, including T’Sou-ke Nation, Sc'ianew Nation, Pacheedaht Nation, and all South Island Coast Salish Nations, specifically Esquimalt Nation and Songhees Nation.   • A starting wage of $29.85 per hour (effective July 1, 2023), for 10 months per year (September 1 to June 30).

What You Need To Apply...

We seek candidates passionate about working with children, demonstrating patience and understanding to support a welcoming and safe environment. The following education and experience are required:

  • Completion of Secondary School
  • Valid Class 2 BC Driver's Licence with air brake endorsement
  • Occupational First Aid Level 1 (or willingness to obtain it)
  • Up to three months of related experience

Qualifications
  • Secondary school graduation
  • Valid Class II BC Driver's Licence with air brake endorsement
  • Willingness to obtain a First Aid Certificate
  • Experience with transporting students is an asset
  • Minimum of one month (80 hours) experience driving a Class 1 or 2 vehicle with air
  • Up-to-date knowledge of the Motor Vehicle Act and Regulations
  • Ability and patience to deal with children in a kind and diplomatic manner
Responsibilities

To ensure that school children arrive safely and efficiently, the driver:

  • Drives the bus safely and adheres to route schedules
  • Handles passengers with diplomacy
  • Performs safety checks and reports repairs
  • Cleans the bus as needed
  • Drives regular routes and may occasionally drive extra runs
  • Follows the Motor Vehicle Act and Regulations

All employment during school days, September through June.
