Reports To: Buildings & Grounds Site Supervisor
Location: Strathlorne, NS
Position: Full-Time, Temporary (40 hours per week, 3 Month Contract)
POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Public Works Buildings & Grounds Site Supervisor, the Buildings & Grounds Labourer is responsible for the maintenance and repair of municipal buildings and grounds and will ensure that municipal properties are safe, clean and welcoming to staff and visitors.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Complete required work on a daily, weekly, monthly and annual basis.
- Complete the landscaping, maintenance and repair of municipal facilities, including, but not limited to, grass cutting, whipper snipping, raking, planting and lawn care.
- Operate equipment, such as lawn care equipment, as required.
- Complete custodial responsibilities of municipal facilities.
- Participate in daily pre-work job assessments and toolbox talks.
- Ensure that all job specific safety reviews, controls and other preparatory requirements are in place prior to commencing an assigned duty.
- Assist in organizing the inventory of Buildings & Grounds tools and equipment.
- Maintain courteous and positive public relations with residents of the community, representatives of organizations and visitors by delivering quality service.
- Ensure the completion of snow removal, including shoveling, plowing and salting.
- Perform emergency maintenance, as required, including evenings and weekends.
- Assist with traffic control, as required.
- Adhere to federal & provincial legislation and regulations.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Ability to follow instructions and work cooperatively and safely as part of a team, as well
- Ability to understand and execute oral and written instruction and maintain records, as assigned.
- Experience utilizing maintenance and landscaping equipment or hand tools.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalent General Education Diploma (GED), Completion of post-secondary education.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
- Valid driver’s license considered an asset.
- WHMIS, Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) and First Aid Training, or willingness to obtain.
- Traffic Control Signer Certification, or willingness to obtain.
SAFETY:
- Ensure all policies and procedures set forth by the Municipality of the County of Inverness are always observed.
- Report all work situations which are suspected of being unhealthy or unsafe.
- Report any employee whose on-the-job performance or actions contravenes established safety procedures or work practices.
- Report all near-misses and incidents
- Report related injuries or property damage regardless of severity.
- Submit reports on accidents and other hazardous conditions discovered and promptly attend to all hazardous situations.
