Job summary

The Wilder Institute's Calgary Zoo is seeking a full-time Building Technician responsible for the safe operation and maintenance of HVAC and mechanical systems across the zoo. You will monitor, troubleshoot, and service building automation (Metasys, RCK Controls) and animal life support, while supporting kitchen equipment and daily maintenance.

This role requires at least five years in building operations, strong problem-solving, and the ability to work with trades.

Qualifications

• 5+ years in Building Operations or facilities maintenance.
• Experience with HVAC, electrical, and life-support systems.
• Ability to troubleshoot and service building automation controls.
• Strong organizational and communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Ensures buildings, structures, and facilities are fully functional and operating safely and efficiently.
• Carries out daily building maintenance tasks in a timely, efficient and safe manner.
• Maintains and troubleshoots mechanical and control systems as required.
• Works with the Zoo’s building automation and control systems – Metasys and RCK Controls.
• Monitors and maintains animal life support systems.
• Provides regular servicing of the Zoo’s commercial kitchen equipment.
• Performs preventive maintenance tasks as per schedule.
• Maintains daily ABSA logs, including activities, changes and on-going events.
• Provides on-call service in accordance with policies and procedures in order to ensure 24/7 operation of all critical systems.
• Schedules work with contractors as required to maintain mechanical systems.
• Purchases materials as required from suppliers as per zoo's procurement policy.
• Executes work orders as assigned.
• Is a team player. Interacts with trades and other staff Zoo wide to ensure a collaborative team environment.
• Additional training that may be required and provided by the Zoo includes; WHMIS, workforce orientation, vehicle operator training, zoonotic disease awareness, skid steer training, respiratory protection, pest control, ozone awareness training, lock out/tag out, hazard assessment & control, forklift training, fire extinguisher training, fall protection, confined space, Code Adam, boom lift training, asbestos/mold training and transportation of dangerous goods.

What you will bring

• Minimum of 5 years Building Operations experience.
• Experience with Building Management softwares and Preventive Maintenance systems required.
• Proven ability to troubleshoot systems.
• Proven experience with heating plants, HVAC, water filtration, electricity, pneumatics, hydraulics, controls, chillers, ozone generation, hydronics and fire alarm systems.
• Experience maintaining commercial kitchen equipment is an asset.
• Well-developed organizational and communication skills and ability to work with other trades required.
• Self-motivated and able to work independently required.
• Customer service focus required.

Working Conditions

• This position requires the individual to work under various conditions: adverse weather conditions, various heights, physical demands (heavy lifting, walking, etc.), confined spaces, pungent odors, near animals, and near zoo visitors.
• 8-hour shifts, weekends and a weekly "On-Call" rotational schedule are part of the normal work schedule, day shifts only.
• Overtime as required.
• Required to lift items weighing over 20 kilograms.

The Wilder Institute's Calgary Zoo is an outdoor facility and all staff working at the zoo must be comfortable working in a large variety of outdoor conditions. The Wilder Institute's Calgary Zoo follows the advice of Environment Canada when responding to temperature and air quality issues.
