Job description

Pretium Engineering is an innovative building science engineering firm providing services to a wide range of residential, commercial, industrial, and institutional clients. We are a Canadian controlled private corporation with locations in Burlington, Newmarket, Ottawa, the Greater Toronto Area, and Kitchener/Waterloo Region. We are managed by our partners and senior management, all of whom have 10 to 30+ years of experience. We provide our expertise to a wide variety of sectors, including commercial, residential, retail, healthcare, educational, institutional, industrial, recreational, and hospitality.


We require energetic self-starters who can work independently and are interested in Building Science engineering services. The successful candidate is comfortable dealing with clients, communicating with contractors, both written and verbal, and working on active construction sites. A commitment to providing first-rate client service and technical excellence to deliver practical, creative solutions is essential. An inquisitive outlook, a hard worker who readily and quickly assumes responsibility and requires minimum direction are traits that are required to be successful in this role.


The Experienced Building Science Professional is responsible for the evaluation, assessment, and design of both new and existing residential, institutional, commercial, and industrial structures.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Managing and/or assisting with project investigation, reporting, specification and drawing preparation, tendering, project management, quality observation and liaison with clients, contractors and manufacturers, as needed;
  • Managing and/or assisting with field review/testing and data collection and preparation of technical/building audits or other investigative reports complete with observations, conclusions, recommendations and repair budgets;
  • Responsible for budget and schedule control, technical competence, documentation quality and physical appearance of construction work to the Client and Project Team;
  • Overseeing project team to ensure onsite quality control and adherence to prepared specifications and drawings;
  • Peer review of reports, specifications and/or drawings;
  • Ensure all deliverables are on time, on budget, and meet or exceed quality standards;
  • Participate in the knowledge sharing culture through meetings and other training opportunities;
  • Continue technical development through formal and informal training;
  • Acquire skills that allow you to demonstrate the importance of budget, time management and scheduling.

Candidate Requirements:
  • Graduate of Civil, Structural or Architectural Engineering, Applied Engineering, or Architectural Technology with more than 10 years of related building science/building envelope problem solving experience including investigation and report, design and construction documentation;
  • Excellent technical writing skills. Reporting is to be concise, follow company report formats, and be based on project specific evidence;
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills to ensure clients are responded to and projects are delivered on time and on budget;
  • Building science knowledge including a thorough understanding of air, water, and vapour control;
  • Knowledge of construction materials and products, material deterioration mechanisms, and repair and restoration methods with specific focus on building envelope assemblies, fenestration and cladding systems;
  • Effective, responsive communication skills (verbal and written);
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel. Proficiency in design-related software is considered an asset;
  • Willingness to work at heights, including climbing ladders and accessing swing stages or lifts;
  • A valid driver’s license and insured vehicle to travel to the office and project sites within Ontario. Work-related mileage is reimbursed.
