Position Details

Detailed Duties & Responsibilities

The Buchanan Curatorial Assistant (BCA) reports directly to Director/Curator Josephine Mills. The BCA will work on several Gallery research and collections projects focused on expanding the University of Lethbridge Buchanan Collection and accessibility to that content. Over the 2025 term, the BCA will engage in some, or all, of the tasks listed below:

  • Become proficient in the use of the Gallery’s TMS Collections database.
  • Become familiar with the University of Lethbridge Art Gallery’s Buchanan Collection of artworks and Artist Files, including 2D and 3D works; fabric pieces; and pieces requiring documentation.
  • Become proficient with the University of Lethbridge Art Gallery practices and procedures for handling artworks.
  • Document artwork into the TMS database through condition reporting and or photography.
  • Develop a research proposal for possible curatorial themes associated with the Buchanan collection that may be used to curate an exhibition in one of the University of Lethbridge Gallery spaces in 2025 or 2026.
  • Assist Gallery Staff with the installation of exhibitions within the Art Gallery.
  • Attend regular Gallery Staff and Collections meetings.
  • Assist with the Gallery Programs Coordinator and assist with the gallery Public Programs as required.
  • Other duties.

Any projects and tasks on any given day or week will be contingent upon campus access restrictions, level of training and availability of co-workers.

Salary

$23.96 per hour.

Position Qualifications

The successful candidate will be a post-secondary undergraduate, with coursework in relevant research areas, including: Art History, Museum Studies, History, Archaeology, Anthropology, Cultural studies and/or Indigenous Studies.

The Successful Candidate Will Also Be Able To Demonstrate

  • Familiarity with Blackfoot knowledge & protocols.
  • Archival research experience.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills.
  • Strong relationship building skills.
  • Ability to work independently.

A valid unrestricted Class 5 Driver’s License with no more than 6 demerits and submission of a motor vehicle record (driver abstract) dated within 3 months of the posting close is required.
