Job Summary

The Bridgetender ensures the smooth daily operation of the Victoria Bridge. Responsibilities include controlling traffic lane changes, managing traffic gates, coordinating with Ministère des Transports du Québec (MTQ) and Seaway, and maintaining traffic safety through hourly patrols and quick response to accidents. This position is a temporary replacement for other Bridgetenders on vacation.

Major Responsibilities
  • Monitor and direct traffic, assisting users as needed.
  • Adjust traffic lanes during rush hours by placing/removing cones, beacons, and gates.
  • Protect all vehicles, including CN and others.
  • Initiate emergency procedures during accidents, including coordinating police, ambulance, and towing services; assist in road cleanup.
  • Operate equipment such as loaders and small power tools for daily tasks.
  • Clear snow from bridge approaches and parking lots.
  • Perform lawn maintenance along bridge approaches, buildings, and parking lots.
  • Maintain buildings (replace bulbs, clean windows and floors).
  • Maintain equipment and tools, including signaling equipment (replace batteries, lights).
  • Maintain and clean vehicles (replace batteries, wipers, tires).
  • Complete vehicle documentation.
  • Act as relief team when needed.
  • Support and oversee work by CN Victoria Bridge Attendants and contractors.
Working Conditions
  • Night shift availability (Tuesday to Saturday, 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM).
  • Primarily outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
  • Stationary role limited to Victoria Bridge operations.
  • Variable schedule.
Requirements
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License from SAAQ.
  • Fluent in French and English.
  • Physical ability to operate all equipment and tools, including snowplows, loaders, and trimmers.
  • Ability to initiate emergency procedures (e.g., ambulance, police).
  • Knowledge of Victoria Bridge activities and Seaway operations.
Training

Mandatory classroom training in CPR and first aid.

This is a unionized position with pay and benefits governed by the collective agreement.
