Job summary

The City of Greater Sudbury is seeking an experienced Bricklayer to join the Roads Operations team. Based at St. Clair Depot, the role is a limited-position assignment with potential extension, starting after selection.

The position may convert to Winter Control per the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Key duties include laying brick, concrete block, and stone for sewers, manholes, and walls, reading plans, and following CGS Safety Manual and provincial rules.

Qualifications

• Minimum of three years experience as a Bricklayer.
• Ability to interpret plans and specifications.
• Must be able to complete C.M.M.S. Crew Cards.
• Excellent use of English; verbal and written.

Main Function

Perform the duties of a bricklayer.

Characteristic

Under the supervision of a Foreperson.

Duties

• Lay brick, concrete block, building stone or shaped tile in the construction and maintenance of sewers, manholes, catchbasins, valve chambers, retaining walls or building walls.
• Develop and maintain a thorough working knowledge of CGS's Safety Manual and the applicable Provincial Legislation listed therein.
• Perform other related duties as required.
• NOTE: This classification automatically converts to a Winter Control Position for the Winter Control Period in accordance with the terms and conditions outlined in the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Qualifications

Education and Training

• Successful completion of Secondary School (Grade XII) Education.

Experience

• Minimum of three years (3) experience as a Bricklayer.

Other Requirements

• Must be able to work without direct supervision and carry out all work required in the construction of brick and block manholes, catch basins, valve chambers or retaining walls.
• Ability to interpret plans and specifications as required.
• Must be able to effectively complete C.M.M.S. Crew Cards.
• Excellent use of English; verbally and in writing.
• Satisfactory health, attendance and former employment history.
• May require the use of a CGS vehicle on CGS business. Must be physically capable of operating a vehicle safely, possess a valid driver's licence and have an acceptable driving record.

This job is also being posted as a development opportunity. Should there be no fully qualified candidate for this position, a candidate who can be expected to meet the required qualifications within a reasonable period of time may be considered for this position as a development opportunity.

Development opportunity rate of pay: $30.71 per hour. The successful candidate will be paid at the reduced rate until the minimum qualifications have been met.
