Job Summary:

The Medical Lead is responsible for clinical issues related to the operation of the BreastCheck, Manitoba’s provincial breast cancer screening program. This includes activities associated with recruitment, testing, result reporting, and follow-up, as well as the radiological aspects of the program. The Medical Lead provides direct support, advice, and training to the staff and radiologists at BreastCheck.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist with program planning, design, implementation, and delivery activities. Participate in strategic planning and in the implementation of new technologies for the program.
  • Assist with the development of literature reviews and knowledge products (e.g., guidelines, referral processes, education materials, standard operating procedures) and review educational resources to ensure medical accuracy and consistency.
  • Collaborate and build consensus with health system administrators and health care providers.
  • Ensure follow-up of abnormal cases is completed appropriately by reviewing selected cases and corresponding with providers as necessary.
  • Support compliance with relevant legislation, including accreditation requirements.
  • Maintain liaisons with relevant stakeholders and professional organizations. Participate in or chair committees and attend meetings as required.
  • Monitor the screening program by reviewing performance indicators.
  • Participate in or deliver educational activities for health care providers and staff (e.g., CME presentations, training).
  • Establish and coordinate quality assurance activities for radiology practice, including but not limited to, developing program guidelines, reviewing cases, reviewing and acting on key performance indicators, and supporting quality assurance and monitoring activities.
  • Provide clinical expertise. Respond to medical and patient-related concerns and inquiries.
  • Stay current on the evidence, literature, and practices related to the natural history of breast cancer, organized screening, testing, and follow-up of breast cancer.
  • Act as a spokesperson when required.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Must be licensed with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba.
  • Must meet the eligibility requirements of the Canadian Association of Radiologists’ Mammography Accreditation Program (CAR-MAP) and the Manitoba Quality Assurance Program (MAQAP).
  • Understanding of population screening principles, breast cancer screening, and breast cancer work-up and treatment.
  • Team player with the ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team that includes non-clinical experts.
  • Exceptional communication skills.
  • Maintain compliance with relevant legislation (eg, Personal Health Information Act).

Assets:

  • Experience training health care providers.
  • Management or administrative experience.
  • Experience working with colleagues across the country.
  • Experience working on health care system issues.
  • Up-to-date on breast cancer screening literature.
