About The Job:
In accordance with established vision and values of the organization, the Biomedical Engineering Technologist travels throughout Interior Health to provide a variety of technical functions related to the Biomedical Engineering Program. These functions include evaluating new equipment, ensuring the safety of medical equipment, repairing equipment, performing scheduled inspections and tests, maintaining related records and providing clinical staff with educational support and technical information.

Typical Duties And Responsibilities:

  • Repairs and calibrates biomedical equipment within the workshop or within the patient care area in the presence of clinical staff and patients. After hours and/or on call service is provided as required.
  • Performs scheduled safety and performance inspections, tests and preventive maintenance on biomedical equipment in Interior Health.
  • Performs incoming inspections of biomedical equipment to ensure that appropriate standards and department policies are maintained. Evaluates new equipment for technical acceptance; installs or monitors the installation of equipment, performs appropriate quality control and safety checks; prepares specifications, schedules, and technical reports.
  • Maintains reports and records on labour, travel and parts used in service and support activities in accordance with department policies.
  • Travels to hospitals in Interior Health for the purpose of delivering biomedical equipment repair and preventative maintenance as directed.
  • Maintains supply levels and orders service parts for repair or inventory by completing purchase and inventory requisitions, identifying appropriate vendors, and second sourcing parts according to Purchasing procedures and guidelines.
  • Provides technical information at the point of care to clinical, paramedical and technical staff regarding safety, operation, maintenance, procurement, installation and disposal of biomedical equipment.
  • Collaborates with multi-disciplinary care teams, practice leaders, patient/client, family and other stakeholders on the decision making process surrounding the purchase, replacement, or repair of medical devices.
  • Participates in biomedical equipment replacement planning by providing information on equipment that is obsolete or has a high rate of failure.
  • Carries out corrective actions as required by Device Hazard Alerts and Recalls. Identifies hazards involving medical equipment in clinical areas to ensure the safety of patients and staff. Notifies the Clinical Manager and Biomedical Engineering Leadership staff as required.
  • Carries out equipment performance and safety testing on equipment involved in incident investigations and document findings to support the Health Canada reporting process for Medical Device Incidents.
  • Attends designated service training course and participates in other educational opportunities to maintain a high level of competence in new products and areas of expansion for the required services in Interior Health as requested by the Employer.
  • Works with and monitors manufacturers' service personnel during installation and warranty work to ensure compliance with facility policies and provincial codes.
  • Provides orientation, guidance, and collegial information or demonstration of equipment or work methods and processes to others including peers, new staff, and students. Provides instruction and/or supervision to students; evaluates and provides feedback on student progress.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
