Overview

As a member of the military, Biomedical Electronics Technologists provide technical maintenance and repair support for medical and dental equipment used in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF). They use electronic instrumentation and workshop tools to ensure the accurate performance of medical devices.

The primary responsibility of the Biomedical Electronics Technologist is to maintain medical equipment according to the specifications of both the Canadian Standards Association and the manufacturer. This includes devices such as:

  • Operating room monitors and devices;
  • Intensive care unit monitors and devices;
  • Emergency room monitors and devices;
  • Medical laboratory equipment;
  • Diagnostic imaging equipment.

Work environment

They may work in regional repair facilities, at Canadian Field Hospitals, Advanced Surgical Centres, or on ships worldwide, performing repairs and maintenance. They must make maintenance visits to medical establishments within the CAF regularly.

If you choose a career in the Regular Force, after completing all required training, you will be assigned to your first base. While postings can be flexible, accommodations cannot always be guaranteed, so relocations are likely. If you join the Primary Reserve Force, you will do so through a specific Reserve unit, working part-time outside of training, typically one night per week and some weekends, with the possibility of full-time employment.
