Job summary

SUMMIT seeks a Biologist Consultant to join our Environmental Planning and Management team in central to southern Saskatchewan. You will lead baseline environmental assessments and monitoring, support permitting and regulatory submissions, and provide technical expertise across a multidisciplinary project team.

You will travel to field sites, mentor colleagues, and help ensure project deliverables are met safely and on time.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or diploma in environmental sciences or related field.
  • Minimum 4 years of direct consulting or environmental industry experience.
  • Familiarity with wildlife, vegetation, wetlands and/or aquatic/fisheries assessments.
  • Understanding of Water Act submissions and related regulatory processes.
  • Experience on active construction sites and ability to travel to remote locations.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and support Saskatchewan-based environmental deliverables including baseline assessments, wildlife/vegetation surveys, wetland and aquatic habitat assessments, nesting bird surveys, and permit/approval support documentation.
  • Participate in regulatory compliance for pre-development environmental projects and environmental planning.
  • Lead site identification and monitoring initiatives including wildlife, rare plants, wetlands, and aquatic/fisheries assessments.
  • Report project status regularly (daily, weekly, monthly) and provide technical expertise for surveys and mitigations.
  • Prepare technical reports and regulatory submissions (e.g., EPEA, Water Act).
  • Lead field assessments following regulated protocols for wetlands, terrestrial, aquatics, and soils.
  • Manage environmental commitments for on-site construction including inspection and monitoring support.
  • Provide professional sign-off where applicable and collaborate with Summit’s multidisciplinary team.
  • Contribute to Summit’s safety culture.

Job description

SUMMIT, An Earth Services Company is seeking a highly motivated and experienced individual to join the Environmental Planning and Management (EPM) Division as a Biologist Consultant (Competition #26-08-0765), based in central to southern Saskatchewan. Reporting to the EPM Project Manager, you will help lead and support a diverse range of environmental planning projects in the energy sector.

What To Expect

As the successful candidate, you will focus on pre-development baseline environmental assessments and environmental monitoring. You will support project delivery through permitting and approvals, regular reporting, site observations, environmental assessments, and environmental monitoring. You will also have the opportunity to mentor team members, strengthen technical knowledge across the group, and help ensure project deliverables are completed safely, efficiently, and on time.

You will have a safety-first attitude, with an ability to take initiative and ownership in a fast-paced multidisciplinary project team environment. Familiarity with the species (wildlife and vegetation) local to the region is beneficial to many scopes of work.

This role is based in central to southern Saskatchewan, with primary reporting through our Weyburn, Saskatchewan office. Site visits throughout western Canada may be available to support other Summit projects.

Job Duties

You will carry out your duties in consultation with the Manager/Project Manager, EPM.

  • Preparing and supporting Saskatchewan-based environmental deliverables, such as baseline environmental assessments, wildlife and vegetation assessments, rare plant surveys, wetland assessments, aquatic habitat assessments, nesting bird surveys, construction monitoring reports, environmental inspection reports, and permit/approval support documentation.
  • Participating in/overseeing regulatory compliance for pre-development baseline environmental projects (Environmental Planning).
  • Participating in/leading site identification and monitoring initiatives which may include wildlife, rare plants, wetlands, and/or aquatic/fisheries assessments.
  • Reporting project status on a daily, weekly, monthly, and/or as-needed basis.
  • Providing technical expertise in relation to regulated/prescribed surveys, detection, and mitigation measures.
  • Preparing technical reports and regulatory submissions, which may include EPEA, Water Act, PCRA, and related project requirements.
  • Leading environmental field assessments following regulated protocols (i.e. wetlands, terrestrial, aquatics, and soils).
  • Leading and adaptively managing environmental commitments for on-site construction projects, including environmental inspection and environmental monitoring support.
  • Providing professional sign-off (professional designation considered an asset).
  • Consulting and engaging with Summit’s multidisciplinary technical team to support project delivery.
  • Actively participating in Summit’s strong safety culture.
Qualifications
  • University degree or diploma from a recognized institution, specializing in environmental science, biology, ecology, or related specialization.
  • A minimum of 4 years of direct consulting or environmental industry experience.
  • Familiarity with wildlife, vegetation, wetlands, and/or aquatic/fisheries assessments.
  • Understanding of, and familiarity with, Water Act submissions, RTFs, and related regulatory processes.
  • Relevant experience on active construction sites, including observing contractors and understanding environmental risks and impacts.
  • Ability to travel to remote locations, potentially for extended periods of time.
The following are considered an asset
  • Registration, or eligibility for registration, with a relevant professional organization.
  • Experience with Saskatchewan-based baseline assessments, wildlife and vegetation surveys, wetland assessments, aquatic habitat assessments, nesting bird surveys, construction monitoring, environmental inspection, and permit/approval support.
