About the role

Join the building science consulting team, in the Specialist, Building Science position, in Operations. In this role, you will provide specialized building science expertise and advice as part of the national building science team. You will conduct sound assessment of risks related to buildings and sites. You will demonstrate expert knowledge, and provide research, analysis, and guidance to support CMHC policies and programs. You will recommend solution-oriented options that respond to business needs, the changing housing landscape and industry best practices.

What you’ll do:

  • Provide advice, guidance, and problem-solving insights on technical building science issues and risks related to housing properties to support the delivery of CMHC programs and products.
  • Analyze, review, and provide recommendations on inquiries such as building condition assessments, cost estimates, environmental site assessments, progress advance reports, and energy modelling reports/audits for various business lines.
  • Lead or proactively contribute to various business or operational projects that require building science expertise.
  • Build and manage collaborative relationships across multiple business lines, to ensure appropriate understanding of risks related to buildings.
  • Develop, and facilitate technically focused, customizable and insightful training to guide and coach on building science risk mitigation activities, issues, associated processes.
  • Perform site technical reviews to assess building conditions, determine program compliance, or forecast required interventions to maintain value and function.
  • Support and actively participate in the setting and achievement of sector, division and team activities, projects, and deliverables.
  • Recommend and implement operational improvements by continuously analyzing business drivers, financial assumptions, and team practices, while contributing to the evolution of processes, protocols, and professional standards.

What you should have:

  • An undergraduate Degree in a related field such as engineering, engineering technology, building sciences or architecture.
  • A minimum of five years of professional experience in building science or a related field.
  • In-depth understanding and practical experience with at least some aspect of the building lifecycle (design, construction, operations and maintenance, decommissioning).
  • Strong consultative skills, with the ability to efficiently analyze and synthesize information from multiple sources, provide informed guidance, and proactively recommend tailored, practical solutions.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills and the ability to present complex information and findings to a variety of audiences and strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience in project management, understanding of principles and best practices.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365, and willingness to work with Whiteboards, Loop, PowerBI, List and Copilot.
  • Stay up to date with industry trends, market conditions, and regulatory changes that impact real estate practices.
  • Bilingualism (English, French).

It would be great if you also had:

  • An affiliation to a professional order or association.
  • Working knowledge of CMHC’s programs, the National Housing Act and associated Regulations.
  • An education, knowledge or experience in other related discipline such as Finance, Economy, Project Management, Property Management, Construction, Quality Assurance, Asset Management.
