Zurich Canada is currently seeking a Senior Automobile Underwriter to further develop our portfolio in the Eastern Canadian commercial insurance market.

Reporting to the Eastern Region Manager, you will be responsible for a portfolio of existing medium to large complex commercial auto risks, with opportunities to grow your automobile portfolio further by leveraging your broad broker network and in-depth underwriting knowledge of all automobile products regionally and nationally.

Your key responsibilities include analyzing and underwriting new and renewal business, utilizing The Zurich Way of Underwriting Framework within delegated authority levels on highly complex assignments, ensuring high-quality service to customers.

What you will do
  • Proactively seek renewal and new account opportunities with key broker partners.
  • Complete detailed opportunity assessments with key distributors to identify growth opportunities.
  • Qualify accounts to meet the organization's appetite, balancing risk and business opportunity.
  • Make agent/broker/customer and on-site calls with a planned and well-prepared purpose.
  • Negotiate terms and conditions and close deals.
  • Cross-sell other lines of business to increase product penetration.
  • Participate in sales team meetings related to assigned brokers and territories.
  • Engage proactively in the target account process, managing a qualified list of opportunities 90 to 120 days prior to effective date.
  • Update systems with details of broker/client visits and account status within required time frames.
  • Serve as a key contact for assigned target accounts.
  • Develop strong broker and client networks related to industries underwritten by the Business Unit.
  • Calculate target prices accurately using underwriting tools.
  • Assess exposure and analyze risks.
  • Assist in training and developing staff.
  • Provide expertise on coverage issues, claims programs, and guidelines.
  • Promote the organization's products and services to increase market penetration.
Job Qualifications - What you bring to the table

Required:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent with 3+ years in underwriting or market-facing roles.
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent with 6+ years in claims or underwriting support roles.
  • Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an Associate Degree and 1+ years of experience in underwriting or market-facing roles.
  • Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an Associate Degree and 4+ years in claims or underwriting support roles.
  • Knowledge of lines of business and legal/regulatory guidelines.
  • Understanding of time restraints for quotes on new and renewal business.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office.
  • Bilingual in French and English is required.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • 5+ years of experience in commercial auto underwriting.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience with medium to large-sized fleet risks, loss-rated accounts, heavy commercial US exposure, and US-plated vehicles.
