The National Police Federation is currently hiring a Bilingual Media Relations / Communications Coordinator to join our team.

Overview of the Role:

The Media Relations / Communications Coordinator plays a key role in helping to organize and deliver on a range of communications, media relations, and issues management initiatives. The coordinator will report to the Media Relations Lead, working closely with them on national and regional media relations initiatives as well as communications initiatives including social media planning and monitoring, Member communications and public education.

The coordinator will work with communications team colleagues across Canada, as well as other internal teams and departments. This position requires a strong blend of collaboration and independence, demonstrated experience with both internal and external communications, and a genuine desire to support our RCMP Members.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Prepare and share regular metrics of media coverage, performance, and sentiment.
  • Review and compile daily reports of relevant traditional media coverage to share with the NPF team.
  • Support the drafting and preparation of press releases and media-related materials for distribution.
  • Support the Media Relations Lead with tracking and responding to media relations inquiries.
  • Monitor traditional and social media for emerging issues, breaking relevant stories, using Meltwater and other tools.
  • Arrange and share news alerts of media coverage on evolving issues as requested.
  • Support the Media Relations Lead in maintaining the NPF media database, including contact information, key interests and coverage.
  • Create and schedule social media content (writing, planning, and posting) for national social channels and designated regional campaigns as part of a rotation and for ad-hoc campaign support.
  • As part of a rotation support the dissemination of e-mail updates to NPF’s ~20,000 Members through Mailchimp.
  • Post ongoing content to the NPF website.
  • Coordinate Member Update approval process in a timely manner.
  • Monitor all social media channels daily on a rotational basis to identify issues, trends, and opportunities.
  • Provide back-up support (vacation, illness, etc.) to rotation tasks when needed.
  • Attend and chair internal team meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Project coordination
  • Self-manage workflow to ensure all tasks are completed within agreed timeframes and flag any concerns or conflicts to the Media Relations Lead or alternate with proposed resolution.
  • Plan and attend events to promote the NPF and build relationships with Members.
  • Communications support for other NPF department initiatives.
Special projects
  • Research, consult, and document various small to large project strategies.
  • Research, write, and review creative assets.
  • Contact and manage external product and service providers with support from Media Relations Lead/Managers/Director.
  • Create surveys and compile data reports.
Administrative tasks
  • Organize work priorities based on tasks assigned by management.
  • Ensure documents are filed properly.
  • Suggest strategies to improve team processes.
  • Provide timely updates on tasks using Teams and email.
  • Ensure Member Updates are uploaded to the website.
Creative assets
  • Create actionable creative ideas based on project goals.
  • Use understanding of photography and imagery to support goals.
  • Video production coordination, including script writing, video story editing and supporting video project tasks for Manager approval and to ensure timely and effective completion.
  • Review effectiveness of various creative assets performance.
  • Interview Members on various topics, including highly sensitive topics.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience
  • Diploma or degree in Communications, Public Relations, or related field.
  • 2+ years of related corporate communications and media relations work experience.
  • Experience with project management and digital asset creation (asset).
  • Bilingualism is required.
Knowledge
  • Strong Knowledge of the Canadian media landscape, media outlets, and emerging media trends.
  • Awareness of government processes and policy issues to effectively support the Government Relations team and collaborate on joint projects.
  • General knowledge of unionized environment.
  • General knowledge of policing and political environments in Canada.
  • Strong knowledge of social media environment including trending topics, content guidelines, technical and new and emerging changes.
  • General understanding of social media and digital marketing.
  • Ability to juggle shifting priorities and intuition to know when to seek guidance.
Skills
  • Ability to independently initiate, prioritize, and organize projects and decisions.
  • Exceptional writing, proofreading, and editing skills with high attention to detail.
  • Highly proficient with Microsoft Office Productivity tools.
  • Familiarity with Mailchimp and WordPress.
  • Familiarity with Meltwater or other media software a plus
  • Strong research and outreach experience and skills.
  • Excellent oral communication and presentation skills.
  • Proven ability to work under pressure on tight deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.

Compensation & Other Important Information:

The starting base salary, depending on qualifications/experience, for this position is between $61,486.88 - $71,735.05 range. The maximum salary for the role is $92,230.32. The ability to advance through the salary range will be based on our internal REACH Program.

Starting annual leave for this position is 3 weeks (accrued as earned) which increases to 4 weeks after five years of employment with the NPF.

While some travel is required for this role, our remote work model includes flexibility in completing work hours and a philosophy in promoting a positive work-life balance.
