Bilingual Litigation Legal Assistant/Law Clerk - Permanent - 18172

About the Opportunity

Our client is a law firm located in downtown Ottawa. They are looking for an experienced and fluently bilingual legal support professional to join their litigation team on a full-time, permanent basis.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Review and revise pleadings for tribunals and most court levels including but not limited to Small Claims, Superior Court, Ontario Court of Appeal, Federal Court, Federal Court of Appeal and Supreme Court
  • Prepare necessary forms for filing and file same with appropriate body
  • Arrange and coordinate service of documents when appropriate
  • Assisting lawyers in preparing for depositions, hearings, trials and conferences; completing many administrative tasks, including working on individual cases
  • Investigating the factual evidence of a transaction or case and preparing exhibits, charts and diagrams to display information
  • Preparation of Affidavit of Documents, Bill of Costs, and other court related documents
  • Research caselaw and prepare Books of Authorities
  • Review factums and finalize with hyperlinks to authorities, tables of authorities, etc.
  • Organizing and tracking firm and matter deadlines and maintaining firm database re deadlines
  • File management including opening and closing files, filing all documents within the document management system and paper files, as required, communicating with clients and organizing meetings, etc.
About You

The successful candidate will have the following:
  • Legal Assistant or Law Clerk diploma from recognized post-secondary institute or suitable combination of education and experience
  • At least three (3) years of experience in a law office setting, supporting a civil litigation practice. Trial experience is a must have.
  • The ability to speak, read, and write fluently in both French and English
  • Ability to plan, organize and prioritize job tasks to meet tight deadlines
  • Ability to ensure consistent attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently within a team environment
  • Ability to exercise discretion when dealing with sensitive information
