The National Association of Women and the Law (NAWL) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to advancing substantive equality for all women in Canada through law reform, particularly at the federal level. Our work addresses many areas of women’s rights, including violence against women, reproductive justice, climate justice, and women’s economic security.
Position type: 11-month contract, full time, four days a week (32 hours)
Location: Ottawa (Hybrid, two days a week in the office preferred); remote work will be considered if the person can make regular trips to Ottawa.

Position Summary
The Communications & Advocacy Coordinator is an integral member of the staff team responsible for executing the organization’s communications plan and related activities. This is a full-time position starting in May 2025 and ending on March 31st, 2026.
Key Responsibilities
Communications (65%)
- Implement the communications plan for the organization in collaboration with other relevant staff, including by posting publications and monitoring comments.
- Work with other staff, especially the legal team, on developing communications about NAWL’s legal work and achievements.
- Draft and contribute to traditional and digital content, including social media posts, media releases, newsletters, web posts, and NAWL’s annual report.
- Design digital communication materials and social media assets.
- Ensure branding standards are met in all communications.
- Update NAWL’s website, including writing and updating website content in collaboration with staff, and liaising with external website maintenance team.
- Support implementing NAWL’s media relations strategy.
- Track and evaluate Google analytics and social media tracking and reporting.
- Monitor and report on media coverage related to NAWL, our sector, priority areas, and key projects, ensuring timely analysis and insights.
- Implement a strategy to grow the readership of NAWL’s newsletter.
- Raise awareness of NAWL’s resources and promote our feminist law reform content.
- Other tasks as needed.
Advocacy (25%)- In collaboration with the legal team, develop digital action and advocacy campaigns, including collaborating on campaign copy, design, and execution (through New/Mode).
- Support NAWL’s efforts to advance advocacy through coalitions, partners, digital engagement, media, and decision makers.
- Support the planning of advocacy activities.
- Assist with the planning and implementation of webinars to build advocacy capacity for members of The Chanterelle Alliance for Feminist Law Reform.
- Other tasks as needed.
Administrative & Coordination Support (10%)- Assist in conference calls, meetings, and events.
- Record and distribute meeting minutes.
- Other administrative and coordination tasks as needed.
Required EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS- Bachelor’s degree or certificate in a relevant discipline.
- 3+ years of experience in content creation.
- Excellent written communication skills in English and French.
- Ability to translate formal materials into plain language and to prepare materials that meet accessibility standards.
- Strong understanding of intersectional feminist discourse, debates, terminology, and inclusive language in French and English.
Assets- Experience working with legal content.
- Research experience.
- Experience with media relations.
- Graphic design experience.
- Web design and maintenance experience.
- Experience publishing op-eds.
- Experience working in advocacy, the feminist sector or a nonprofit.
- Extensive knowledge of Canada’s media ecosystem, especially as it relates to feminist law and policy in Canada.
- Demonstrated commitment to feminism and social justice issues through work or volunteerism.
- Demonstrated skill in use of CMS platforms (WordPress).
- Demonstrated skill in tracking and reporting web and social media metrics (Google Analytics, Hootsuite, etc.).
- Demonstrated skill with Canva.
- Demonstrated skill in using email marketing and online advocacy tools (Constant Contact, MailChimp, New/Mode).
Work environment and work conditions- As a feminist employer, NAWL offers a 4-day workweek.
- Work hours are flexible.
- Indicate in your application if you are based in the Ottawa region, and if you are able to work in-person at NAWL’s Ottawa office two days per week. Fully remote work may be possible for the right candidate.
- You may occasionally have to work outside of normal work hours (for example, evening meetings or events, weekend staff retreat).
- You may have to travel within Canada, unless it is not possible due to your circumstances.
Compensation, Vacations And Benefits- The salary range for this position is $63, 000 – $65, 000 annually, based on qualifications and experience.
