The Big Picture

Berean Baptist Church (bereansudbury.ca) is seeking a Pastor who will preach the Word of God, equip the Saints for works of service, and reach the lost for the glory of God.

The Church

Berean Baptist Church is located in downtown Sudbury, Ontario, about 4 hours north of Toronto. The city is centered on mining and is a university and hospital hub for Northeastern Ontario, with a population of about 160,000. As “Bereans” (Acts 17:11), we value strong Bible preaching and teaching and are eager to share the Gospel locally. We purchased and renovated a new building in a more residential neighborhood over six years ago. We are committed to addressing social issues affecting our community and sharing the good news with those around us.

We will discuss these matters in more detail in person. Our beliefs and practices are outlined here, emphasizing our statement of faith. To clarify our stance amidst diverse evangelical opinions, we affirm:

• The Bible as our rule of faith and practice; inspired, inerrant, and infallible Scripture
• Justification as a forensic act of God declaring the sinner not guilty based on Christ’s merit; we reject the “new perspective”
• Belief in sovereign grace and individual election for salvation
• A literal 6-day creation
• “Last things” aligned with a primarily amillennial view
• The Lord’s Table following believers’ baptism, restricted to those baptized by immersion and walking with the Lord

Requirements

The Candidate

• Preaching and teaching at services
• Outreach activities including children’s, youth, adult, and senior ministries; the pastor’s gifts will guide involvement. Participation in the television outreach, Focus on the Bible, supported by the church, is also possible.
• The pastor is expected to chair church business meetings, though this can be adjusted as needed.
• Some administrative responsibilities and office management may be required, but should not be burdensome. A willingness to assist as needed is essential.
• The goal is to inspire others to serve, aligning with Ephesians 4:11-16, emphasizing shared ministry beyond the pastor’s efforts.

Expectations regarding character and family include adherence to biblical standards for elders and overseers (1 Timothy 3, Titus 1). A godly character and visible fruit of the Spirit are vital. Family support is crucial; elders should demonstrate hospitality and exemplary family life. The pastor’s wife is expected to be an active church member, attending services and participating in church activities as gifts and time permit.
