Bell Let’s Talk day is a campaign to promote conversations around mental health, with a goal of reducing stigma around mental illness. Reducing stigma, along with self-judgment or shame, can help people feel more empowered to seek support.
Mental health is the ability to think clearly and make good decisions. Tending to your mental health might include talking through concerns with a professional. Mental health, along with emotional, physical, and spiritual health, contributes to overall wellbeing. Emotional health involves awareness of feelings and the ability to express them, which might include journaling about positive experiences. Physical health encompasses taking care of your body, such as going for walks a few times a week. Spiritual health relates to your sense of purpose and connection to life, which might involve spending more time outdoors. All these facets are interconnected; caring for one can positively impact the others. The key is to find self-care practices that work for you.
Accessing mental health resources can sometimes be challenging due to costs. Fortunately, the Gabriel Dumont Institute (GDI) partners with Guard Me to provide 24/7 access to online mental health services through keep.meSAFE for GDI students. Additionally, GDI staff have access to the Employee & Family Assistance Program via LifeWorks. Support is available through web links or their respective apps—scan the QR code on the left to download.
Prioritizing wellbeing is essential for students and staff to perform at their best. Everyone deserves to feel good, and taking care of oneself is the first step.
GDI is a Saskatchewan-based educational, employment, and cultural institute serving Métis communities across the province.
