Job description

Job Summary:

The Behavior Management Specialist is responsible for assessing, developing, implementing, and monitoring a consistent behavior management program for juvenile justice students with an emphasis on proactive programming. Further, the Behavior Management Specialist serves as a resource for teachers, administrative staff, and family members regarding behavior support and behavior management for the students at the Juvenile Justice Alternative Education Program.

Essential Functions:
  • Assist in instruction of individual or small groups of students in a variety of settings.
  • Assist in the implementation of a behavior modification program.
  • Monitor and report on student behavior.
  • Prepare Positive Behavior Support plans for selected students.
  • Assist with the implementation of IEPs.
  • Analyze behavior challenges and adopt an effective course of action for students and staff.
  • Establish a cooperative and effective working relationship with team members.
  • Evaluate the use of the facility for safety and efficiency.
  • Train new staff on behavioral interventions and processes of behavior management.
  • Model appropriate positive behavior management by the use of PBS strategies.
  • Attend and participate in training, workshops and in-services provided by the Southwest Key Program or outside agencies as requested.
  • Become certified in Handle with Care within 30 days of hire date.
  • The ability to correctly and safely perform a Handle with Care physical restraint hold(s).
Other Functions:
  • Must maintain any professional or para-professional certifications acquired while employed with SWK annually.
  • Able to react to change productively and handle other essential tasks as assigned.
Qualifications and Requirements:
  • Bachelor's Degree with a background in educational, psychology or applied behavior sciences with three years’ experience in an educational or clinical setting.
  • Able to demonstrate knowledge of federal and state education laws.
  • Able to demonstrate an understanding of Texas Juvenile Probation rules.
  • Demonstrated understanding of behavior management techniques and methodologies.
  • Possess highly developed communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Capable of working independently with little guidance.
  • Experience working with an at-risk population.
  • Must possess a valid state driver’s license and be eligible to drive to facilitate program services as per contractual requirements.
  • Must be able to work a flexible work schedule.
  • Cleared background check from appropriate entity.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.
Physical Demands:

Must be able to obtain Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) certification and First Aid Certification (CPR). Must be able to supervise clients indoors and outdoors as necessary. Bending, stooping, and lifting up to 30 lbs required to complete daily tasks. Involves walking and standing for extended periods of time.

Work Environment:

Work shifts are subject to change. Noise levels vary from mild to moderate. Predominantly indoors, occasional outdoor monitoring or activities. This position’s location varies to include confined spaces encountered while traveling across the county. Exposed to prevalent weather conditions.
