About The Organization

Dark Horse Espresso Bar is a pioneer in the Toronto specialty coffee community and has become a hotspot attracting those who enjoy great coffee, handmade pastries, and a comfortable environment. Over the past 15 years, we have evolved from one beloved neighborhood cafe to a collection of six shops across vibrant neighborhoods in Toronto.

About The Position

The Barista at Dark Horse’s cafe will work closely with the Store Manager to ensure an exceptional employee and customer experience. Candidates should possess business acumen, natural hospitality, and soft skills. The successful candidate will be excited to grow a coffee-focused hospitality business and embrace its challenges.

Key Responsibilities

1. Lead by example to deliver an outstanding experience for all customers and community members.
2. Build a network of promoters within the business community.
3. Support in-store merchandising to showcase products and enhance financial performance.
4. Follow operational policies and procedures, including cash handling, safety, and security during each shift.
5. Take food and beverage orders using the POS system.
6. Ensure product recipes meet the highest quality standards.
7. Maintain relationships with current suppliers and develop new ones.
8. Ensure compliance with Ontario’s business and employment regulations.
9. Act as a buffer or assign staff to cover sick or absent employees when necessary.
10. Manage efficient and optimized ordering processes.
11. Uphold health, safety, and food handling practices.
12. Maintain the cleanliness and merchandising of the store.

Requirements

1. Minimum 1 year in Food Retail Management.
2. At least 1 year of experience as a Barista.
3. Smart Serve Certification is an asset.
4. Experience or knowledge in retail setup.
5. Ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 25-30 pounds.
6. Basic math skills and cash handling experience.
7. Passion for food and commitment to delivering a top customer experience.
8. Full-time availability.

Availability & Compensation

1. Expected hours: 40-44 hours per week.
2. Full-time, early morning and weekend availability required.
3. Hourly wage up to $18.50, depending on experience.
4. Corporate benefits available for supervisory positions.
5. Position includes gratuities and variable compensation based on store performance.
