Job summary

Job description

Duties

Under the direction of the Catering Services Coordinator, the Banquet Server supports the delivery of catering and banquet services for Vancouver Island University events. The role assists with event setup, food and beverage service, guest interaction, and event cleanup to ensure functions are delivered efficiently and in accordance with established service and food safety standards. Work is performed as part of a team and follows established procedures, service instructions, and Banquet Event Orders. The position requires evening and weekend availability and involves physical work including moving food, equipment, and furniture across campus.

Key Duties
  • Assist with the setup and dismantling of catering and banquet events, including arranging tables, chairs, linens, buffet equipment, and service stations according to event instructions and Banquet Event Orders.
  • Transport food, beverages, equipment, and supplies between kitchens, storage areas, vehicles, and event locations using carts, vehicles, or other equipment as required.
  • Provide food and beverage service to guests during catered events in accordance with established service procedures.
  • Perform bar service where assigned in accordance with Serving It Right requirements and established alcohol service procedures.
  • Support the maintenance of buffet and service stations during events by replenishing items and assisting with service tasks as directed.
  • Clear tables and service areas and assist with post-event cleanup, including returning dishes, glassware, and service equipment to designated areas.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of service areas and follow established food safety, sanitation, and workplace safety procedures.
  • Follow direction from the Catering Services Coordinator or designated event lead and report service issues, safety concerns, or supply shortages as required.
Required Qualifications
  • Grade 10 completion.
  • FoodSafe Level 1 certification.
  • Serving It Right certification.
  • Minimum 3 months of customer service experience.
  • Ability to lift and move equipment and supplies (up to approximately 20 kg with appropriate aids) and to stand/walk for the duration of shifts.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to work in a fast‑paced, team‑based service environment while maintaining a professional, customer‑focused approach.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Valid Class 5 Driver's License as it may be beneficial for some assignments.
  • Experience in bar service or bartending.
  • Experience in banquet, catering, restaurant, or hospitality service.Experience working in event or conference services.
