Overview
WHAT’S THE JOB?
Based in a world class Horizon North camp facility on Baffin Island, NU, the regular shift for this position is 28 days on / 14 days off, with 12-hour workdays. Transportation is provided to site from a pickup point in Edmonton.
The Baker is responsible for the preparation and baking of all pies, squares, bread products and daily sweets as required.
This position is safety sensitive and requires drug, alcohol and fit to work testing as a condition of employment.
General responsibilities
- Consult with the Chef on daily baked goods requirements to ensure portions are adequate
- Prepare and bake all pies, squares, bread products and daily sweets from scratch or pre-mixed product and dating items, as per requirements
- Ensure production schedule is met, recorded and timely delivery of all baked products
- Create with the chef and follow menus to ensure proper rotation of baked goods and desserts
- Supervise night shift employees
Specific activities and tasks
- Supervise night shift ensuring all work is completed and up to company standards
- Assist any client needs as required
- Check and document the temperatures of freezers and coolers
- Prepare a variety of quality from scratch baked goods
- Prepare fresh pastries & bread for breakfast and sandwich maker daily
- Prepare cookies and squares keeping adequate stock supplies for the lunchroom
- Prepare fresh buns for supper daily
- Prepare three different desserts and one pie selection for dinner service. Have them plated and wrapped
- Prepare Jell-O and puddings for dessert daily
- Cutting and wrapping pastry
- Clean, wash, and sanitize equipment and work areas. Sweeping and mopping the floor
- Responsible to cover all baked goods including breads
- Assist with the resupply of baking area on grocery delivery days
- Maintain storage and bakery cleanliness
- Provide professional, courteous guest service always
- Other duties as assigned by the Chef
- Responsible for overall food presentation
- Clean and maintain the designated workstation
- Ensure health and safety regulations and quality standards are maintained
- Assisting in unloading, loading and placing of groceries and supplies
- Assisting in maintaining the cleanliness of dining room and overall kitchen

Qualifications
Who are we looking for?
- FoodSafe Level I is a minimum. SafeCheck advanced food safety certification or HACCP certification is an asset
- Minimum 3 years’ baking experience in a similar or hotel / institutional environment
- Proven experience preparing baked goods for large number of guests
- Prior supervisory experience
- Ability to stand for a long period of time and lift up to 35 pounds
- Successful candidates MUST obtain a mark of 80% or higher on the mandatory WHMIS test (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System)
