Overview:
Our client is seeking a highly skilled Azure DevOps consultant for a short-term contract to modernize their deployment pipelines and Azure service configuration. their infrastructure has grown organically over the past 7 years, and a strategic expert is needed to help streamline systems, improve performance, and reduce costs while ensuring long-term maintainability and reliability. This work will take place within a strictly controlled Azure enterprise subscription, so experience navigating regulated environments is essential. This is a high-impact role where your expertise will directly shape their cloud architecture and DevOps practices.Their development team is fully remote, but there are also some desks available at their Vancouver office for those who prefer an in-office setting. We are looking for a hands-on resource to start immediately – there will be some focused project work for about four weeks full-time, then this will become more of a part-time ad hoc engagement.

What you will be doing:

  • Conduct a comprehensive audit of existing Azure DevOps pipelines and Azure service configurations within an enterprise-controlled environment.

  • Develop a strategic roadmap to modernize our deployment processes and reduce technical debt.

  • Implement infrastructure-as-code practices for consistent and repeatable environment management.

  • Optimize pipelines for speed, reliability, and maintainability while adhering to enterprise policies.

  • Provide recommendations for cost optimization across Azure resources within strict compliance frameworks.

  • Document best practices and deliver knowledge transfer sessions to internal teams.

  • Collaborate with development, DevOps, and infrastructure teams to ensure successful implementation.

Deliverables

  • A detailed assessment report outlining current state and improvement areas.

  • A strategic architecture and implementation plan for modernized deployment processes.

  • A suite of deployment and release scripts/templates that replace the majority of existing code.

  • Recommendations for Azure resource optimization with estimated cost savings.

  • Implementation of prioritized pipeline improvements.

  • Comprehensive documentation and best practice guidelines.

  • Knowledge transfer sessions for internal technical staff.

What you must have:

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience with Azure DevOps (formerly VSTS/TFS) and Azure cloud services.

  • Proven expertise in designing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines.

  • Proficiency with infrastructure-as-code tools (GitHub Actions, ARM templates, Bicep, Terraform).

  • Strong understanding of containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes, AKS).

  • Experience with key Azure services (App Services, Logic Apps, Azure Functions, Azure SQL, Entra ID).

  • Knowledge of security best practices and pipeline security within controlled environments.

  • Experience modernizing legacy DevOps processes.

  • Familiarity with Azure monitoring and logging solutions (Application Insights, Log Analytics).

  • Experience working within strictly controlled enterprise subscriptions (e.g., governance, compliance, and security policies).

Nice to have:

  • Microsoft certifications (Azure DevOps Engineer Expert, Azure Solutions Architect, Azure Administrator).

  • Experience with YAML-based and JSON-basedpipeline definitions.

  • Familiarity with release management (blue/green deployments, canary releases).

  • Database deployment automation experience.

  • Knowledge of test automation scripting — unit, integration, system.

  • Knowledge of Azure cost management and multi-environment deployments.

  • Experience navigating compliance requirements and security protocols within large organizations.

This is a unique opportunity to leverage your Azure and DevOps expertise to make a significant impact on their infrastructure and deployment processes within a regulated enterprise environment. You’ll work alongside a dynamic and collaborative team dedicated to modernizing their cloud environment. Work remotely or from the Vancouver office – your choice!
