The Overnight Housing Support Worker (HSW) supports tenancy through eviction prevention, community safety initiatives, and providing trauma-informed, harm reduction, and anti-oppression services to meet tenant wellness needs.

This role requires in-depth trauma support knowledge, supporting onsite health, safety, social, and mental well-being, and collaborating with security to ensure effective overnight operations. The HSW acts as a resource for staff and tenants, providing mental health and addiction supports, crisis assessment, and property supervision.

About YWCA Toronto – Housing Support Program, Church Street
The facility includes 120 permanent housing units. The Case Worker provides case management to women and gender-diverse individuals, including those with complex mental health issues, those experiencing homelessness or transitioning from institutions, and Indigenous women/two-spirit people. The program focuses on housing stabilization, harm reduction, and health promotion, supporting tenants to overcome barriers and maintain housing.

Key Responsibilities

  • Implement eviction prevention measures to help tenants maintain their tenancies;
  • Provide crisis intervention and counseling for women, children, and gender-diverse individuals;
  • Monitor and report on tenants’ health and well-being;
  • Coach tenants in conflict resolution and mediation skills;
  • Offer case management, support, and referrals related to health, harm reduction, and food security;
  • Conduct safety assessments and identify tenant needs and resources;
  • Maintain knowledge of relevant legislation and support strategies;
  • Apply trauma-informed practices, staying current and serving as a resource during overnight shifts;
  • Participate in community development and capacity building initiatives;
  • Ensure accurate documentation of support activities.

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree (e.g., Bachelor of Social Work) or equivalent experience;
  • 1-3 years experience in housing/shelter settings working with diverse populations impacted by trauma, homelessness, mental health, or addictions;
  • Strong crisis intervention and conflict resolution skills;
  • Experience in group facilitation and leadership development;
  • Supportive, client-centered, and strengths-based approach;
  • Knowledge of harm reduction, community resources, and relevant legislation;
  • Culturally sensitive service delivery skills;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office;
  • Excellent communication skills;
  • Understanding of anti-oppression, trauma-informed, harm reduction, and feminist frameworks.
