A leading financial services provider seeks an AVP for Individual Insurance and Affinity to provide strategic legal guidance for their segregated fund business in Canada. This senior role involves legal support, mentorship, and collaboration across teams to optimize insurance products and ensure regulatory compliance.

The opportunity
Manulife is seeking an experienced lawyer to join our Individual Insurance legal team as AVP Individual Insurance and Affinity to provide strategic and specialized legal advice and deliver practical, timely, and cost-effective support for matters related to the Individual Insurance segregated fund business in Canada.
The AVP, Individual Insurance & Affinity will report to the VP & Chief Counsel, Individual Insurance, Affinity and Canada Law. This individual will interact with senior legal management, leaders of related functional groups within Canada Segment and will represent Manulife in relevant CLHIA working groups.
Position Responsibilities:
You will provide legal support for the Individual Insurance segregated fund business in Canada, including
providing and leading analysis and recommendations concerning developing legislation and regulations affecting segregated funds
supporting the development and improvement of segregated fund products, including drafting, or reviewing product documentation
collaborating closely with legal and compliance colleagues to ensure a seamless delivery of legal support for segregated fund activities including new business, optimization initiatives, reinsurance, operations, and customer care
collaborating with business partners to support our business strategy and objectives
mentor lawyers on segregated fund matters and insurance matters generally
support the Chief Counsel for Individual Insurance and Canada Law in the provision of legal services and team development
as required, work closely with colleagues in Privacy, Cyber, Anti-fraud and Government Relations and Regulatory Affairs
Required Qualifications:
Law degree and admission to a provincial Bar required, along with at least 10 years of proven experience
Understanding of the legal regulatory requirements that apply to the insurance industry in Canada
Experience with legal issues related to product development, policy administration, complaint resolution and the distribution of such products and services
Proven ability to work independently, efficiently, collaboratively, and strategically under substantial time pressure
Ability to ask the right questions to quickly assess internal client and customer needs and provide timely support
Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to influence at all levels of the organization, including senior management
Demonstration of outstanding client service as well as the practical application of analytical skills and exercise of good judgment
Proven track record of collaborating and adapting to constantly evolving demands and expectations
Proven leadership in building and maintaining strong, credible working relationships with clients, management, and colleagues

HybridSalary range is expected to be between

The actual salary will vary depending on local market conditions, geography and relevant job-related factors such as knowledge, skills, qualifications, experience, and education/training.
