As a member of the military, Avionics Systems Technicians are responsible for maintaining all electronic systems onboard Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) aircraft. They are part of the aircraft maintenance team, handling first line servicing operations in launching and recovering all types of aircraft.
The primary responsibilities include:
Technicians work primarily at air bases, in hangars, airborne, in labs, and on the flight line. They may work shifts and overtime, with employment locations across Canada, including the Arctic, and overseas for NATO and UN missions.
The minimum education requirement is Grade 10 or Secondary 4 in Quebec, including Math 416 / CST 4. Candidates with a college diploma or Red Seal in related civilian occupations are preferred. Foreign education may be accepted.
The CAF offers subsidized training through programs like NCMSTEP, which includes basic training, on-the-job training, and college courses, with salary and benefits.
Training includes Basic Military Qualification, followed by specialized technical training at CFSATE in Borden, Ontario, covering topics like digital logic, avionics systems, navigation, and communication systems. Advanced courses and on-the-job training are available for career development.
Part-time employment is available through the Primary Reserve, allowing service at local units while studying or working civilian jobs. Reserve members serve part-time, with opportunities for full-time deployment.
Training involves initial basic military training, followed by technical training at CFSATE and other facilities, totaling approximately 77 weeks. Reserve members serve up to 12 days per month, with pay and benefits comparable to full-time personnel.
