Position Summary

BCIT’s School of Transportation is seeking an auxiliary/on-call Program Technician Facility Coordinator. This position supports the educational activities on campus, ensuring that training equipment is acquired, maintained, repaired, and ready to use as required. This position also provides coordination and logistical support for campus operations, and internal/external events on campus. This position is also the primary provider of first aid on campus.
This position is the on-site contact for campus and school staff, for issues related to day to day facilities management, and liaises with the externally contracted Building Operator and BCIT Project Services staff.

This competition is on-going with opportunities for part-time or full-time hours of work. Contracts will range from one to three weeks in duration, dependent on operational needs.

Duties & Responsibilities

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

Program Technician

  • Maintains the training tank and surrounding areas on a daily basis:
    • Including testing and adjusting chemicals to the appropriate levels
    • Performing annual maintenance and makes recommendations as appropriate
    • Keeps records for provincial health inspection and provides maintenance according to licensing body regulations and department requirements
    • Ensures the tank, deck area and surrounding rooms are clean and orderly
  • Maintains the life raft shop equipment, jetty installations and buildings. Inspects and ensures tools and equipment are kept in accordance to manufacturer and industry standards. Ensures that work area is kept clean and in a safe and proactive condition
  • Inspects and maintains marine emergency duties training equipment such as immersion suits, personal floatation devices, recharging CO2 cylinders, ensures life-rafts are functional and completes minor repairs when necessary; repacks life-rafts according to manufacturer sandards
  • Maintains life boats and hoisting equipment to ensure they are in good standing with manufacturers and Transport Canada requirements by providing routine maintenance checks; services and performs minor repairs as required; maintains wet weather gear and coveralls and replaces as required
  • Ensures all records, logs of inspection and services for life boats, davits, hoisting and lifting equipment, and life-raft shop equipment are kept up-to-date and organized
  • Ensures adequate levels of training materials are on hand; prepares purchase requisitions or acquires supplies using the corporate purchase card system
  • Serves as the main marine campus contact for marine industry equipment and service providers
  • Ensures the yearly Capital Asset inventory is done accurately, timely and that inventory lists are maintained throughout the year. Assigns asset tags to newly acquired equipment as required
  • Participates in internal and external audits for the purpose of maintaining accreditation
  • Provides trouble-shooting/assistance to instructors, staff and clients for audio visual set-up and coordinates with internal departments for additional support when required
  • Provides ad-hoc assistance to campus staff for connectivity issues related to AV and IT equipment; ensures the availability of audiovisual resources and maintains knowledge of campus A/V inventory
  • Acts as WHMIS coordinator for the campus and maintains WHMIS / MSDS documentation and various other certificates

Facility Coordinator
  • Receives information on campus deficiencies or areas requiring attention from campus staff and submits them to facilities service providers/building operators via Archibus work request system.
  • Ensures effective/timely communications back to campus staff on status of requests submitted through Archibus
  • Serves as the marine campus liaison during approved project work; coordinating with the relevant project coordinator within the BCIT Project Services Group as required
  • Provides facility service providers/building operators with required information related to space usage and schedules to minimize disruption to campus activities. Communicates maintenance and project impacts to BMC management and user departments
  • Participates in monthly facilities meetings
  • Provides internal logistical support for supplies, equipment, furniture, room set-up and disposal of items from campus; in consultation with both campus staff and internal BCIT departments when required
  • Serves as a the primary marine campus contact for deliveries and receiving, ensuring that receiving information is forwarded to BCIT Logistics as required
  • Coordinates the use of shared storage spaces on campus
  • Liaises closely with Administrative staff to support internal and external events and facility rentals; ensure all related requirements are met including:
    • Coordinating room set up
    • Determining logistics with respect to course scheduling and course requirements
    • Coordinating pre and post event activities such as equipment delivery, set-up, and pick up
    • Performs post event building and equipment inspection
    • Ensures adherence to all BCIT policies and procedures
  • Undertakes related duties as assigned, consistent with the job grade of this position.
Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS :

The qualifications represent the minimum qualifications required in the future (i.e. to be reflected in job postings) and do not reflect the incumbent’s existing qualifications.

Education:

  • Grade 12 and completion of Survival Craft, Basic Safety Training and Marine Emergency Duties courses a definite asset.

License(s)/Certification(s):
  • Transport Canada certification for Bridge watchman or Deck Officer, and Marine Emergency Duties a definite asset
  • Building Maintenance Technician certification an asset
  • Occupational First Aid Level II or capability to acquire essential
  • WHMIS certification

Experience:
  • Two years general experience, plus two year’s practical experience in one of the following areas: marine industry, building maintenance

Software/Computer Application(s) and Expertise:
  • Computer literacy essential, basic understanding of Windows and MS Office

Communication/Interpersonal Skills:
  • Good communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Ability to deal with issues of a sensitive nature with tact, diplomacy and discretion
  • Capable of working both independently and in a team environment
  • Ability to keep accurate records of inventory, maintenance schedules, first aid and WSBC reports, quality system management system documentation
  • Solid organizational skills including the ability to multi-task

Other Skills/Abilities:
  • Position requires a high degree of physical activity including frequent standing, bending, reaching, lifting and moving heavy objects
  • Overhead lifting of 30kg is required
  • Weekend, evening and on call work as required
  • Willingness to work outside frequently in all types of weather
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision

Salary Range

Salary Range Salary Grade 8: $34.32 - $37.28 per hour.

Additional Salary Information

External hires are initially placed at the minimum of the salary range with set progressions to the maximum as per the Collective Agreement. Salary prorated based on percentage and term of appointment.
