We are currently recruiting for an Automation Specialist for our Combustion Management and Industry Applications CoE Project team, based out of Calgary. Reporting to the Manager, Combustion Management and CoE Operations, the successful candidate will be a key member of our S3 project team, participating in the entire life cycle of projects, from initial system audit, new control system design (hardware, software, control narrative, cause & effect / shutdown keys, etc.), configuration/programming, FAT/i-FAT, and site commissioning and start-up (C&SU).


This role presents the opportunity to work with a leading supplier of Industrial Combustion Systems in Western Canada, working with all sectors of large industry. Our packages include: BMSs, Combustion Controls (CCS), Fuel Trains, Custom Burner Applications, High Integrity Pressure Protection Systems (HIPPS), Hydrogen blending solutions, etc. Our combustion solutions cover Steam Generation (OSTG/HRSG), Process Heaters, Low and High Temperature Drying Applications, Incinerators, Reboilers and Industrial Furnaces.

Role and Responsibilities
  • Configure/program and troubleshoot Burner Management Systems (BMS), and combustion controls on multiple control platforms: DeltaV, DeltaV SIS, AB PLCs, etc.
  • Work with Customers’ process and electrical engineers to define functional requirements
  • Configure burner control strategies, implement shutdown keys, configure Safety Instrumented functions, interface with third party products (e.g. PLC’s)
  • Develop HMI graphics
  • Lead Internal verification and Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT):
    • Support internal hardware testing.
    • Conduct internal software acceptance testing.
    • Conduct hardware and software Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) with customers.
    • Conduct hardware and software integrated Factory Acceptance Testing (i-FAT) with customers.
  • Lead commissioning and start up (C&SU) activities:
    • Site Acceptance Testing with customers (SAT)
    • Loop checks
    • Human Machine Interface (HMI) and configuration function testing
    • Third party interface checks (when required)
    • Asset Management Systems (AMS)
    • Operations support for troubleshooting activities.
    • Tuning and characterization
    • Documentation
  • Develop and review controls engineering deliverables: control narratives, shutdown keys, state transition diagrams, SAMA diagrams, and alarm and trip setpoint lists.
  • Train customers/service companies on DeltaV burner systems
  • Provide phone support to customers/service companies
  • Collaborate with the projects team, engineering consultants, and customers in resolving technical issues
  • Provide technical support during system shutdown and start-up activities
  • Provide technical applications/solutions to Customers and maintain awareness of their technical requirements
  • Provide input into improvement of current engineering processes and practices
  • Proactively contribute to team learning and knowledge sharing
  • Provide technical support for Sales Teams as required
  • Participate in our 7/24 on call rotation
  • Travel to our customers’ offices and their sites is expected
Qualifications and Skills
  • B.Sc. in Electrical, Mechanical or Chemical Engineering (emphasis on Process Control an asset) or Instrumentation Engineering Technologist Diploma
  • 3+ years of experience with industrial automation control system configuration and programming, preferably Emerson DeltaV, DeltaV SIS, or AB PLCs
  • Knowledge of CSA B149.3 code is considered an asset
  • Ability to read and interpret P&IDs
  • Ability to read and interpret network architecture drawings
  • Ability to read control panel schematics and troubleshoot wiring issues
  • Experience with any of the following is an asset:
    • DeltaV and DeltaV SIS
    • Rockwell, and Modicon PLCs (RSLogix 5000, Concept, Unity) (an asset)
    • Fuel/Air ratio controls, both mechanical and automated
    • Loop Tuning
    • Modbus Communications
    • Field commissioning and startup (CS&U) experience
    • Burners and combustion systems
    • Combustion Applications:
      • Boilers, OTSGs, and HRSGs
      • Direct and Indirect Fired Air Heaters
      • Rotary and Fluid bed dryers
      • Sulphur Recovery processes
      • Thermal oxidizers, effluent processing and incinerators
      • Media heaters, i.e. oil, glycol etc.
      • API natural draft heaters, single and multi-burner
    • Industry Applications:
      • High Integrity Pressure Protection Systems (HIPPS)
      • Hydrogen blending process is considered an asset
  • Instrumentation background: familiar with field devices (i.e. control valves, pressure, flow, level, and temperature transmitters and wiring standards)
  • Good troubleshooting skills, and ability to think on one’s feet
  • Aptitude for prioritizing multiple tasks and managing multiple assignments
  • Exceptional communication skills and customer service experience and practices
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment
  • Entrepreneurial work ethic
  • Safety conscious and able to complete applicable safety training (e.g. H2S Alive, CSTS, First Aid, etc.)
  • Willingness to travel; valid Class 5 driver license required
