Automation Engineers work as a member of a multidisciplinary team responsible for the identification, design, implementation, and maintenance of Process Control Applications, Distributed Control Systems (DCS), and more. You will work collaboratively with unit panel operators, process engineers, maintenance, reliability, other automation engineers, and vendors.

Minimum Requirements:
  • 7-10 years of work experience in an industrial setting (with a minimum of 3 years automation experience)
  • Honeywell DCS and Schneider PLC experience is preferred
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Electrical, Instrumentation, Process Control, Chemical)
  • Registered, or eligible to register, as a Professional Engineer with APEGA
  • Able to identify complex problems and develop, evaluate, and implement solutions
  • Comprehensive knowledge of industry codes, company standards, and safety policies
Responsibilities:
  • Implement configuration changes, troubleshoot, and maintain current process control systems
  • Analyze and develop continuous improvement techniques to optimize reliability and performance
  • Initiate and conduct complex assignments requiring modification of established guidelines and procedures
  • Support development, management, and sustainment of process control system KPIs
  • Apply Suncor and industry standards (ISA, IEC, CSA)
  • Participate in Incident Management, Corrective Actions, Process Hazard Analysis, Job Safety Analysis, and Management of Change
  • Influence stakeholders on technical decisions, ensuring process safety and safety design principles
  • Build and support automation best practices, standards, and guidelines
  • Support alarm management and critical system procedures
  • Assist with BMS proof tests, major turnaround projects, unit start-ups, and project commissioning
  • Make decisions balancing intuition and rational analysis to achieve optimal solutions
  • Lead or collaborate in teams to develop plans for long-term objectives and strategies
  • Adhere to safety policies, standards, and values in all work activities
Location and Other Details:
  • Based at a Syncrude location in Fort McMurray
  • This position is safety and security sensitive, requiring a criminal history check
  • Relocation to within 60 km of Fort McMurray is mandatory if residing outside; relocation support and housing assistance are provided
