ABOUT COULSON AVIATION

Coulson Aviation is a global aerial firefighting company operating in the USA, Canada, Australia, and South America.

We operate a fleet of large aerial firefighting aircraft, including both fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft, enabling rapid aerial fire suppression, initial attack, and extended attack protocols.

Due to our growth and expanding footprint, we are seeking an Automation & Controls Technician in Port Alberni, BC.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR:

The Automation & Controls Technician supports the design, development, and maintenance of controls platforms. Responsibilities include contributing to all stages of controls application development, providing service and support for our aerial firefighting products and programs. Reporting to the Controls and Automation Manager, this full-time role requires onsite presence in Port Alberni, with some travel and after-hours support as needed.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Design, implement, and test application software for logic-controlled systems.
  • Participate in system architecture design for hardware and software.
  • Provide equipment drawings, schematics, and layouts per standards.
  • Support troubleshooting and maintenance of system controls and components.
  • Collaborate with vendors to specify and select control components.
  • Develop and improve testing and calibration procedures.
  • Assist in creating application support documentation.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Degree or Diploma in Controls, Automation, Mechanical Engineering, Electro Mechanical, or Hydro Mechanical Engineering.
  • Proficiency in programming logic controllers.
  • Experience with PLC logic languages: LD, FBD, SFC, ST, IL.
  • Data analysis skills using Excel and MATLAB.
  • Familiarity with MS Office suite: Outlook, Teams, PowerPoint, Word.
  • Experience with control troubleshooting tools like Multi-Meter and CAN-Sniffer.
  • Knowledge of CANbus and/or Modbus protocols is an asset.
  • Experience with bulk material handling or mobile applications is an asset.
  • Strong teamwork, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
  • Comfortable working across multiple locations and time zones.

BENEFITS:

  • Hourly wage of $28.25 - $30, depending on experience.
  • Company-paid benefits and a 5% matching pension plan.
