What Is the Opportunity?
Under close supervision, this position is responsible for investigating and evaluating, primarily low to moderate complexity claims, to determine coverage available to policyholders and claimants. This role handles 3rd party Personal Insurance and Business Insurance ABI claims, covering a wide variety of causes of loss. It applies policy, legislation, and company guidelines to all claims to manage loss costs and customer relations. Occasionally, it handles claims with complexities related to unique coverage and/or damage issues. This position does not manage staff.
What Will You Do?
- Handle 3rd party PI and BI ABI claims of low to moderate severity and complexity.
- Make contact with insured within Best Practice guidelines.
- Return all phone calls and emails within Best Practice guidelines.
- Provide clear explanations of claims process and coverage to customers.
- Act as primary contact for customers and as intermediary between customer and other parties.
- Participate in extended hours duties as required.
- Advise underwriting of any information that may affect risk assessment.
- Investigate and evaluate relevant facts to determine coverage, damages, and liability.
- Conduct prompt investigation of coverage and liability.
- Document claims files according to Best Practices.
- Manage pending and settled claims within company averages based on claim type, complexity, and geographical area.
- Use diary system proactively on files.
- Review and analyze policy conditions, provisions, exclusions, and endorsements.
- Review invoice amounts and supporting documentation.
- Maintain diary follow-up to ensure prompt disposition.
- Keep all claims files and company information confidential.
- Identify and follow up on salvage and subrogation opportunities.
- Perform investigations appropriate to the financial exposure.
- Research company experience and case law to substantiate quantum, coverage, and liability.
- Manage files per established Best Practices.
- Establish accurate claim and expense reserves and update system promptly.
- Determine settlement amounts using judgment, estimates, appraisals, and policy limits.
- Explain payment amounts to customers via email or letter.
- Refer files above settlement authority to Unit Manager and follow up until closure.
- Negotiate and convey claim settlements within authority limits.
- Write denial letters, Reservations of Rights, and other complex correspondence.
- Control damages using cost containment tools.
- Meet quality standards and manage file inventory for timely resolution.
- Handle files in compliance with provincial regulations where applicable.
- Provide excellent customer service to insureds, brokers, and others.
- Identify and refer claims with Major Case Unit exposure or requiring outside inspection.
- Refer complex claims for specialized handling as appropriate.
- Identify potential fraud and refer to Investigative Services.
- Identify and refer subrogation opportunities.
- Handle claims virtually from across the country, managing increased volume as needed.
- Travel to other offices and provinces occasionally.
- Perform any other duties as required.
What Will Our Ideal Candidate Have?
- University Degree/College Diploma or equivalent business experience preferred.
- Enrollment in the CIP program is an asset.
- Proficiency with Windows-based programs including spreadsheets and word processing.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to understand and apply policies and procedures.
- Proficiency in typing.
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to work independently.
- Strong analytical and decision-making skills.
- Adjusters license as required.

- Hardware and software skills for claim and estimating technology.
- Insurance License(s) may be required within three months of starting.
What Is a Must Have?
- At least one year of previous work experience.
- Experience with computer technology, including Microsoft Office, email, web applications, and databases.
- Ability to perform numerical calculations accurately.
- Licensing required for certain roles.
- Must secure and maintain a company credit card if required.
