Job summary

A community support organization in the Region of Waterloo is seeking an Attendant Services Worker to provide personal support and assistance with daily living activities. The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills, experience in caregiving, and relevant certifications. This role involves respecting consumer autonomy and ensuring safety and well-being. A valid G2 driver's license and a recent Vulnerable Sector Check are required.

Qualifications

  • 6 months experience in care of persons with disabilities or related field.
  • Knowledge in transferring, lifting, and attendant care duties.
  • Vulnerable Sector Check completed within last 6 months.

Responsibilities

  • Provide personal care and homemaking tasks.

Job description

The Attendant Services Worker provides personal support services to consumers who requires assistance with activities of daily living (ADL) in accordance with an established service plan. This includes both personal care and homemaking tasks. The Attendant Services Worker will respect and uphold the vision, mission, and values of Independent Living Waterloo Region, demonstrating the highest standard of courtesy and respect in their dealings with other employees, consumers, and internal/ external stakeholders.

Activity A: Services to Consumers

• Provide attendant services in accordance with the established policies and procedures as established by ILWR to promote consumer safety and attendant safety

• Follow the service plan, observe and report any substantial changes in consumer health, safety and/ or wellbeing to the Attendant Services Supervisor

• Provide physical assistance with a wide range of activities of living including:

o Providing total personal care such as toileting, bathing, and perineal care

o Grooming, including shaving, mouth, skin and hair care

o Assist consumer with dressing and undressing

o Assist with incontinence product change

o Assist with controlled acts as defined by the care plan

o Assist in feeding consumers who are unable to feed themselves

o Take and record vital signs (temperature, pulse, respirations and blood pressure)

o Support good skin care to prevent skin breakdown (i.e. turn and reposition client, actively

o encourage movement)

o Breathing Assistance (i.e. tracheostomy, respirator)

o Assist client with active and passive range of motions as defined by the care plan.

o Provide consumer with assistance in walking and transferring

o Document observed changes

o Assist consumer in the self-administration of medication

o Perform light housekeeping

o Perform meal preparation and clean up

o Change bed linens and make the Consumer’s bed

Activity B: Working Relationships

• Respect and uphold the privacy of consumers, consumer families and fellow employees

• Respect and recognize consumers autonomy to make decisions and choices for themselves• Maintain cooperative, respectful and helping relationships

• Inform supervisor of incidents and events affecting care

• Promote a high level of morale and effective working relationships between staff, consumers and management through the exercise of sound judgement, appropriate communication and fine example

Activity C: Team and Administrative Responsibilities

• Maintain and/ or prepare records and reports as required in an accurate, timely and effective manner (i.e., recording and submitting of hours worked and duties performed, completion of incident/ accident reports, etc.)

• Maintains and complies with relevant policies, procedures and practices with ILWR

• Contributes to the organization’s work by attending and participating in team/ staff meetings, and committee work

• Attend training sessions and staff meetings as required by ILWR

• Attendants will be responsible for executing their duties in full compliance with ILWR’s Occupational Health and Safety policies, safe work practices and legislated standards. Employees must report all unsafe and unhealthy conditions affecting both staff members and consumers

• Assist with training/orientation of new attendants and orientation of new consumers

• Stay up-to-date with changes impacting the organization

• Any other duties as may be assigned

Experience:

• Six (6) months experience working/ volunteering in care of persons with disabilities, convalescent care, or another related field

• Knowledge of, and experience in transferring, lifting, and other attendant care duties

Qualifications:

• Minimum Grade 12 Education

• Completed or working towards HSW/ PSW Certificate Preferred

• Current First Aid & CPR certificate

• Food Safety certificate

G2 or equivalent driver’s license is required for all Attendant Service Worker positions

• Vulnerable Sector Check completed within the last six (6) months
