Job summary

The Wilder Institute-Calgary Zoo is seeking a permanent full-time Associate Veterinarian to support day-to-day animal health activities, including clinical medicine, surgery and pathology. This role reports to the Senior Manager of Animal Health and Welfare and works within a collaborative team to safeguard animal welfare.

Applicants must hold a DVM with an unrestricted Alberta license, have at least three years in zoological medicine, and ideally be ACZM-certified or eligible.

Qualifications

  • DVM degree and unrestricted Alberta license to practice veterinary medicine.
  • Minimum three years of full-time zoological medicine experience, ideally with internship/residency.
  • Board certification or eligibility for board certification by the ACZM.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills in a team environment.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgement independently and while contributing and participating in a team environment.
  • Must establish rapport with management, staff, and guests.
  • Must be able to participate in the zoo’s emergency response team; PAL license if firearm response.

Responsibilities

  • Provide day-to-day animal health care including clinical medicine, surgery, and pathology.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external specialists to optimize patient care.
  • Contribute to emergency response readiness and participate in routine health programs.

Job description

Join our team at the Wilder Institute’s Calgary Zoo and support the health of the animals in our care! The Animal Health and Welfare team is seeking a permanent full-time Associate Veterinarian who will be primarily responsible for day-to-day animal health activities (clinical medicine, surgery, pathology, etc) as part of the team. This is a full-time position that reports to the Senior Manager of Animal Health and Welfare.

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine with ability to be licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the province of Alberta is required (unrestricted license)
  • Minimum of three (3) years of full-time zoological medicine experience, with strong preference for completion of an internship and/or residency in zoological medicine.
  • Board certification, or eligibility for board certification, by the American College of Zoological Medicine (ACZM). If not board certified, this will be an expectation of the position.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills in a team environment.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgement independently and while contributing and participating in a team environment.
  • Must be able to establish and maintain an effective rapport with all levels of management, employees, and guests.
  • The position is part of the zoo’s emergency response team. If participating in firearm response, must possess, or be eligible to possess, a firearm Possession and Acquisition License (PAL).
