OMERS Ventures is an early-stage tech investor helping our founders succeed so their businesses profit and in turn, help real people prosper. Today’s founders know that tomorrow’s customers care about how businesses are funded. Where their money comes from matters. And as the venture arm of one Canada’s largest pension plans (and the only pension plan in the world that does direct early-stage investing), when we invest money, we also infuse meaning. It’s a pretty unique position to be in, in the world of venture investing.

Our global investment team is a mix of finance professionals and operators from various industries that bring diverse perspectives as we evaluate investment opportunities and enable us to be of greater service to the companies we back. We care more about the grit, raw skills, and attitude you bring to the table than your relevant work experience.

Position Overview

Today, we are looking for someone with a unique blend of Fintech industry experience, passion for technology, business acumen, and cultural fit to join the OMERS Ventures Fintech investment team as an Associate in Toronto, New York, or San Francisco.

You would be the foundational associate as part of the Fintech / Financial Software Team. On this team you will have the opportunity to make outsized impact not only from an investment perspective but also in building your own brand and network across technology.

Key Responsibilities

  • Identify and evaluate high-potential startups through market research, startup databases, and direct outreach to entrepreneurs.
  • Actively source new investment opportunities supplemented through industry events, and relationships with founders, accelerators, and other venture capital firms.
  • Conduct meetings with startup founders and executive teams to evaluate business models, growth strategies, and potential for scalability.
  • Lead and contribute to the due diligence process, assessing both quantitative and qualitative factors, including market opportunity, competitive landscape, financials, team dynamics, and product viability.
  • Build strong relationships with founders, offering guidance and mentorship where appropriate.
  • Work closely with the investment team to create detailed investment memos and recommendations for potential investments.
  • Assist portfolio companies post-investment by providing strategic advice, helping with introductions to potential customers, talent, partners, or follow-on investors.
  • Support the development of operational and financial strategies within portfolio companies, collaborating with founders and management teams to drive growth.
  • Stay up-to-date with market trends, emerging technologies, and industry disruptions that could impact the venture capital landscape and sharing those ideas out via content.

Qualifications

  • 2-6 years of experience in venture capital, operational experience at a technology or financial services company, growth equity, management consulting, or investment banking.
  • Experience working, or investing, in the Fintech market is required.
  • Strong understanding of startup ecosystems, venture capital financing, and key metrics for evaluating early-stage companies.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, a natural ability to network with founders, investors, and other stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct thorough due diligence and analysis.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, intellectual curiosity, and attention to detail.
  • And above all else, a sense of teamwork and belief that the sum can be greater than the parts.
