At UBC, we believe that attracting and sustaining a diverse workforce is key to the successful pursuit of excellence in research, innovation, and learning for all faculty, staff and students. Our commitment to employment equity helps achieve inclusion and fairness, brings rich diversity to UBC as a workplace, and creates the necessary conditions for a rewarding career.
The Associate Recruiter Admissions Advisor is responsible for the implementation of a comprehensive undergraduate recruitment and admission process to ensure the university achieves new student enrolment objectives (in terms of both quantity and qualities of students). The role works closely with internal and external partners to advise and support prospective students, with particular attention to the advancement of Indigenous peoples’ human rights and UBC’s commitment to reconciliation, as articulated and called for by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada. The position works with the broader Student Recruitment and Advising team to foster access, success and representation at UBC of historically underserved, marginalized or excluded populations. Associate Advisors determine and support the access and placement for over 20,000 applicants annually, applying to 41 direct-entry and professional degree programs within 15 Faculties on two campuses. For the first part of the enrolment cycle, the position executes strategic recruitment programs and advising services for secondary and post-secondary school students, parents and counsellors in Canada for the purpose of encouraging qualified prospective students to seek admission to UBC. Advises students on the secondary and post-secondary credentials concerning UBC admission criteria and specific program requirements for admission to UBC undergraduate programs on both campuses. For the latter part of the enrolment cycle, the position executes admissions assessments for a discrete set of undergraduate applicants presenting, but not limited to: a) Canadian Secondary School curricula, American Secondary School curricula, the International Baccalaureate Diploma, Chinese Upper Middle School curricula, and GCE (UK-styled) curricula. Associate Advisors must exercise independent judgment while remaining in alignment with Senate-mandated admission policies and principles of practice (UBC’s Principles of Effective Undergraduate Admission).
Associate Recruiter Admissions Advisors report to the Manager, Undergraduate Admissions and the Associate Director, Student Recruitment and Advising. The position also works closely in collaboration with: (a) Student Recruiter-Advisors and Recruitment Marketing Prospective Student Engagement and other on-campus units (i.e. First Nations House of Learning, Indigenous Programs and Services, The Beyond Tomorrow Scholars Program, Centre for Accessibility, International Student Initiative) to support the recruitment, advising, admission and successful transition of all students to UBC.
Enrolment Services functions as the face and interface of the University in order to help the University meet its enrolment targets, recruit and admit outstanding students who share the University’s values, and enhance UBC’s reputation with students, parents, counselors, and the general community. This position is responsible for providing effective recruitment services and delivering accurate information about admission to the University’s undergraduate programs with the aim of meeting the university’s enrolment goals for our Vancouver and Okanagan campuses. Advising students, counselors and others incorrectly could have serious and costly consequences for the prospective student, measured in lost opportunities, financial hardships, and failure to attain education goals. Associate Advisors are also fully accountable for their evaluation decisions and administrative errors can result in appeals to the Senate Admissions Committee. The admissions decisions made by Associate Advisors often require a good deal of discretion based upon judgement, are not routinely subject to confirmation, and are legally binding upon the University. UBC’s goal is to support and enhance the participation and success of students from systemically marginalized communities at our two campuses with a priority on the advancement of Indigenous peoples’ human rights. Ineffective work will result in the failure of the University to meet goals set out in the University Strategic Plan (Shaping UBC’s Next Century), the Inclusion Action Plan, the Indigenous Strategic Plan, the Beyond Tomorrow Scholars Program and the Student Recruitment and Advising Strategic Plan. Ineffective work could damage the relations of UBC and trust with key communities and organizations.
Reports to and works under the general direction of the Manager, Undergraduate Admissions and the Associate Director, Student Recruitment and Advising. Receives occasional guidance from Associate Director, Undergraduate Admissions and Director, Undergraduate Admissions and Student Recruitment and Advising. Works with moderate supervision. Receives general direction on new assignments and is expected to act within, and somewhat beyond, established policies and procedures. Must demonstrate initiative, diplomacy, tact, resourcefulness and sound judgement when representing the University. Demonstrates cross-cultural competency and intercultural skills when advising prospective students with different cultural backgrounds. Must employ an inclusive and respectful approach in interactions with prospective students and parents, with counselors and institutional representatives as well as faculty and staff at UBC.
