In this role, you will be challenged to work every day on some of the most advanced ports and marine projects. You will be exposed to projects in North America working with colleagues across the globe having a high level of expertise and delivering state-of-the-art solutions. The team delivers advanced structural engineering and coastal engineering for waterfront structures.

We are looking for an Associate Project Director – Ports and Marine professional to join our highly skilled team of specialists that provides detailed engineering and project management on numerous marine infrastructure and waterfront structures projects. Your primary tasks will be to manage projects, lead technical teams, and contribute actively to the company’s business development efforts. This position will be part of the Canadian Leadership Team where the incumbent is expected to contribute actively in growing the Canadian business.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • Act as Project Manager on projects, overseeing their delivery to ensure they are completed on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards. Projects will vary in size and complexity.
  • Supervise technical teams delivering complex technical expertise to projects, from detailed design, concept design to construction services.
  • Define project scope, objectives, deliverables, and engineering fees in collaboration with clients, stakeholders, and internal teams.
  • Manage contractual and commercial aspects, including contract notices, client and subconsultant claims, and subconsultant variations.
  • Participate in project review meetings, sharing insights on lessons learned and best practices to drive continuous improvement.
  • Lead business development and marketing efforts for marine projects in Canada, develop a pipeline of projects and clients, and actively pursue project opportunities.
  • Lead the preparation of proposals for upcoming projects.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key clients to support growth.
  • Represent COWI in external settings, such as technical committees, conferences, seminars, professional bodies, and business groups, as they pertain to marine infrastructure projects.

You will be a part of the Canada Leadership team and will:

  • Participate in strategy meetings to contribute to COWI Group's strategic priorities.
  • Contribute to developing COWI’s business in Canada so that COWI North America meets or exceeds its strategic targets.
  • Facilitate team collaboration by providing leadership and guidance to projects team members while fostering a culture of teamwork and innovation.
  • Support hiring efforts by the operations team.
  • Serve as an ambassador for COWI’s values.

On top of that, you will have:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Marine Engineering, or a related field.
  • A registered Professional Engineer license (P.Eng.) in BC or the ability to obtain it within 6 months of hire. A PE license in the USA is considered an asset.
  • A minimum of 12 years of experience working on marine infrastructure projects, with at least 5 years in a management role, preferably as a Design Manager or Project Manager.
  • Proven experience in delivering marine projects across all phases, including feasibility studies, conceptual design, and detailed engineering.
  • An extensive background in the marine and port sector, along with technical management experience leading small to large-scale marine projects.
  • Knowledge of and preferably experience working with local clients in the BC area; knowledge of clients outside of BC is considered an asset.
  • Strong communication, negotiation, and leadership skills.
  • A valid passport and be available to travel occasionally within North America to meet with clients and team members.

Base compensation: $145,000 to $213,000 for North Vancouver location only. Actual compensation is subject to variations due to education, experience, skill set, and location.
