Description:

The Sprott Department of Surgery at University Health Network (UHN) is conducting a search for the next Division Head of Neurosurgery and the Harold & Esther Halpern Chair in Neurosurgery, an endowed chair at UHN and the University of Toronto. This appointment is for a five-year term, renewable once, following a successful review. The Division Head appointment is a full-time faculty position at the level of Associate or Full Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Toronto and will be based at University Health Network. The effective date of these appointments is flexible; however, we hope to have this search completed by mid 2025.

The Division Head, working in dyadic collaboration with the program Clinical Director, will oversee the administration activities of the Division of Neurosurgery, with responsibilities for clinical and academic activities including excellence in patient care, teaching of medical students, residents and fellows, research, innovation, recruitment, and related service duties. Financial management and assurance of quality of care in the division are core components of this position.

Qualifications include an MD with specialist certification in Neurosurgery and eligibility for for certification by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, or hold equivalent international certificate, and for licensure by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. The successful candidate will possess strong leadership skills encompassing integrative thinking and managerial tools, emotional and political intelligence evidenced by a strong track record. Leadership training is an asset, however it is not a mandatory requirement. Expertise and excellence in teaching at all levels and research productivity are expected.

Remuneration will be derived from a variety of sources, mainly from, but not limited to fee-for-service billings, and commensurate with rank as a member of the Clinical Faculty, qualifications, and experience. The Harold & Esther Halpern Chair in Neurosurgery, an endowed chair, will contribute to the support of administrative and academic activities. Academic start-up funds will be provided in alignment with the background and experience of the applicant, as well as the academic proposal envisioned by the candidate. Additional compensation will be provided commensurate with qualifications and experience.

University Health Network is comprised of the Toronto General Hospital (TGH), Toronto Western Hospital (TWH), Princess Margaret Cancer Centre (PM), the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute, West Park and the Michener Institute of Education. UHN is an academic institution affiliated with the University of Toronto and is recognized internationally for excellence in patient care, research, innovation and education with strong values of safety, compassion, teamwork, integrity and stewardship.

The Division of Neurosurgery currently comprises 11 full-time clinical faculty members who collaborate in patient care, education, research and innovation in the context of a wide variety of multi-disciplinary and interprofessional programs including the Krembil Brain Institute, Surgical Programs & Critical Care, Neurology and the Joint Department of Medical Imaging to name a few.
