Job description

The Department of Civil & Mineral Engineering in the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in the area of sustainable systems, system resilience, and climate change adaptation, especially related to energy, transportation, and infrastructure systems. The appointment will be at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2026.

The successful candidate, upon formally accepting the offer, may be nominated for a Canada Excellence Research Chair in Climate Adaptation and Resilient Infrastructure Systems. This program supports world-class researchers in establishing ambitious research programs at Canadian universities. Nominees will be internationally leading researchers whose proposed research aligns with the Government of Canada's Science, Technology, and Innovation priorities. Chairs are appointed for eight years, with awards of $1 million or $500,000 annually, reflecting research costs across disciplines.

The University requires applicants to have a PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering or a related area, with an exceptional record in research, service, training, and teaching. Candidates should complement and enhance existing departmental strengths and support the University’s Climate and Sustainability initiative, including the Lawson Climate Institute established in May 2025 with a $60 million donation.

The candidate should be a recognized leader in decarbonization of energy and transportation systems and infrastructure design for climate change adaptation, with a sustained record of high-impact research, publications, conference presentations, awards, societal impact, and contributions to the discipline's visibility. Evidence of research excellence, service to the research community, mentoring diverse students and staff, and fostering an equitable and inclusive environment are required.

Evidence of teaching excellence should be demonstrated through accomplishments, a teaching dossier, and strong reference letters. Salary and rank will depend on qualifications and experience. The department recognizes leaves (e.g., parental, illness, COVID-19 impacts) and will consider these during review.

Established in 1827, the University of Toronto is Canada's largest university and a global leader in research and teaching. The Department hosts highly ranked undergraduate and graduate programs in Civil Engineering and Mineral Engineering, fostering a world-class environment.

Toronto, a multicultural city, offers numerous cultural and research opportunities, encouraging interdisciplinary collaboration.

Applicants should submit a cover letter, CV, research statement, one recent publication, and a teaching dossier with a statement, sample materials, and evaluations. They must also provide contact details for three references, with reference letters collected automatically after application submission. All materials must be received by June 16, 2025. For questions, contact Professor Marianne Hatzopoulou at chair.civmin@utoronto.ca.

Further details on application procedures are available at http://uoft.me/how-to-apply. The timeline for nomination and submission to the Canada Excellence Research Chairs Program is in early 2026. The program prioritizes candidates outside Canada but welcomes all qualified applicants.

The University values diversity, equity, and inclusion, encouraging applications from Indigenous Peoples, Black and racialized persons, women, persons with disabilities, and LGBTQ+ individuals. A voluntary Diversity Survey is part of the application. Accommodations are available for applicants with disabilities, and contact can be made via uoft.careers@utoronto.ca.
