Associate Medical Officer of Health (AMOH)

As the Associate Medical Officer of Health, you will play a vital role in shaping and guiding public health strategy in Peel. Reporting to the Medical Officer of Health, you will provide medical expertise and strategic direction to multidisciplinary teams across our division, while supporting the effective planning, implementation, and evaluation of public health programs.

You will work closely with divisional leadership and internal and external partners to support our mandate under the Ontario Public Health Standards and champion innovative approaches that improve the health and well-being of Peel residents.

What You’ll Do

  • Provide leadership and evidence-informed medical expertise in public health program design, implementation, and evaluation as part of the Public Health Leadership Team
  • Collaborate with Associate Medical Officers of Health, Directors, and Managers to align divisional activities with the department’s strategic goals
  • Build and strengthen relationships with community partners, government agencies, health professionals, and residents to support a collaborative approach to public health
  • When delegated by the MOH, act as a spokesperson and medical authority on key public health matters, engaging the public, media, and stakeholders
  • Promote a culture of equity, inclusion, accountability, and continuous improvement within Public Health
  • Respond to medical consults from public health staff and community physicians
  • Provides 24-hour on call MOH coverage on a rotation basis
  • Leads or supports emergency response
  • Support the Medical Officer of Health as required

What You Bring

  • Eligibility for an independent practice certificate from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO)
  • Specialty certification in Public Health and Preventive Medicine (formerly Community Medicine) from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada
  • Proven ability to lead change in complex and dynamic environments
  • Exceptional communication and stakeholder engagement skills, including experience liaising with elected officials, media, and diverse community groups
  • Political acuity, strategic thinking, and a deep understanding of the broader public health landscape
  • A commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and cultural humility, and experience integrating these values into your practice and leadership style

In this role, you’ll benefit from the flexibility of a hybrid work arrangement that prioritizes meaningful in-person connection. A minimum of two days per week on-site is expected, with additional in-person presence as operational needs evolve. This arrangement allows for a blend of in person and hybrid work that adapts to support both organizational priorities and employee flexibility and is subject to change over time.

It's important to note that your off-site work location must be within the province of Ontario. This ensures that we're compliant with all regulations and policies.
