Job summary

Banque Nationale du Canada is seeking an Associate, Execution for the National Client Group in Western Canada. The role focuses on underwriting, portfolio management and transaction execution across large private businesses, public corporations and PE-backed entities.

Based in Calgary or Vancouver, you will prepare credit analyses, financial models, and underwriting materials, while collaborating with Credit Risk Management and senior team members to structure complex financing solutions.

Qualifications

  • Hold a Bachelor's degree in accounting, business, economics, finance or a related field.
  • 2 to 5 years of experience in commercial banking, corporate banking, leveraged finance, corporate finance, credit underwriting, financial advisory or a related field.
  • Progress toward completion of, or completion of, professional designations such as CFA, CPA or CBV is considered a strong asset.

Responsibilities

  • Assume primary underwriting responsibility for an assigned portfolio of clients, including annual review completion, covenant monitoring, risk rating maintenance, portfolio quality assessments and identification of emerging credit risks.
  • Support National Client Group, Western Canada team members in managing and growing a portfolio of relationships across both bilateral and syndicated lending mandates while supporting broader team initiatives.
  • Independently prepare credit analysis, financial models, borrower risk ratings and underwriting materials for annual reviews, renewals, amendments and new lending opportunities.
  • Perform detailed financial analysis, cash flow assessments, capital structure reviews and borrower performance evaluations to identify key risks, develop well-reasoned underwriting recommendations and prepare comprehensive credit submissions in support of new lending opportunities, amendments, annual reviews and other portfolio requests.
  • Present and defend credit recommendations to Credit Risk Management while incorporating feedback into transaction structures and approval materials.
  • Participate in transaction structuring discussions involving leverage, covenant design, collateral packages and other credit risk mitigation measures.
  • Manage assigned transaction workstreams, including financial analysis, due diligence coordination, borrower risk assessments, internal approval materials, documentation review and closing support.
  • Work closely with advisors, private equity sponsors, legal counsel and internal banking partners to execute financing transactions and complete required due diligence activities.
  • Maintain ongoing dialogue with clients and internal stakeholders regarding financial reporting requirements, covenant compliance and portfolio monitoring matters.
  • Work collaboratively with, and provide day-to-day guidance to, Analysts on financial analysis, portfolio monitoring activities and preparation of credit-related materials.
  • Leverage Excel, Copilot and other productivity tools to improve analytical quality, underwriting efficiency and transaction execution processes.

Based in either Calgary, Alberta, or Vancouver, British Columbia, and reporting to the Head of Credit Execution, Western Canada, you will contribute to the management of a portfolio while actively participating in credit underwriting, portfolio management and transaction execution activities. You will further develop the technical expertise and credit judgment required to manage increasingly complex financing opportunities.

This position represents the first fully accountable Credit Execution role within National Client Group, Western Canada and provides the opportunity to further develop the underwriting, execution and credit judgment skills required to progress into more senior positions. Associates are responsible for preparing underwriting analysis and credit recommendations, managing portfolio responsibilities, interacting with Credit Risk Management and contributing to transaction structuring discussions alongside senior team members while supporting the delivery of complex financing solutions to clients.

Working hours are dictated by portfolio and transaction demands under a hybrid work environment with both days in the office and at home. Occasional travel for client and team meetings will be required.

Your Job:

Basic Requirements:

  • Hold a Bachelor's degree in accounting, business, economics, finance or a related field.
  • 2 to 5 years of experience in commercial banking, corporate banking, leveraged finance, corporate finance, credit underwriting, financial advisory or a related field.
  • Progress toward completion of, or completion of, professional designations such as CFA, CPA or CBV is considered a strong asset.
  • Demonstrated experience performing credit underwriting, financial modeling, borrower risk assessments and preparation of credit submissions for corporate or upper mid-market clients.
  • Strong understanding of financial statement analysis, cash flow lending, credit structuring and syndicated and bilateral financing transactions.
  • Experience managing annual reviews, amendments, renewals and ongoing portfolio monitoring responsibilities.
  • Ability to analyze complex information and formulate well-reasoned credit recommendations.
  • Strong written communication skills with an ability to prepare clear, concise and well-reasoned credit submissions and recommendations.
  • Demonstrated proficiency using Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Copilot and other productivity tools to support financial analysis, credit underwriting, portfolio management and transaction execution.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with an ability to establish credibility with internal stakeholders, clients and external advisors.
