Job description

One of Canada’s Most Trusted Investment Brands.

At Picton Mahoney Asset Management, being alternative isn’t just what we do—it’s who we are.

Founded by industry pioneer David Picton, we’ve spent 20 years challenging conventional wisdom and redefining the investing landscape. As one of Canada’s most trusted investment brands, we are proudly independent—privately run, 100% employee-owned, and deeply committed to delivering results for our clients.

Thinking Alternatively is in Our DNA.

With a team of 160 bold thinkers—one-third dedicated solely to investment management—we are specialists, not generalists. Managing $13.8 billion for institutional and retail clients, we navigate markets with conviction, resilience, and a forward-thinking approach.

We’re more than investors — we’re innovators. We challenge traditional investment mindsets, constantly pushing the boundaries to achieve our mission: To bring greater certainty to investors.

Our success is built on four guiding principles:

· Treat investors’ money like our own.

· Redefine the way investors invest.

· Be human—always approachable.

· Succeed together, one investment at a time.

These aren’t just words—they define how we think, how we invest, and how we work.

Now, we’re entering our next chapter. We’re transforming our brand and reshaping the way the world invests. If you think alternatively, embrace an entrepreneurial spirit, and thrive in a dynamic, bureaucracy-free environment, join us and be part of what’s next.

Thriving in Our Entrepreneurial Culture

At Picton Mahoney, you’ll thrive in our creative and dynamic workplace, where collaboration and support are at the core of everything we do. At our firm, you’ll have the opportunity to take on significant responsibilities, work in a flexible environment, and tackle challenging projects from the outset. Our culture is designed for ambitious professionals who want to make an immediate impact while continuing to push boundaries and achieve our greater mission. You’ll be empowered with a high level of responsibility, trust, and flexibility, providing an exciting and creative space for you to help reshape how the world views alternative investments. With competitive total rewards, performance-based bonuses, and a clear path for career growth, you’ll have everything you need to develop both now and over the longer term.

The Opportunity:

We are seeking a highly motivated and intellectually curious Equity Research Associate to join our dynamic investment team. In this role, you'll play a key part in identifying and analyzing equity opportunities across global markets to help shape the firm’s portfolios. This is an exciting opportunity for a driven individual with a passion for investment research, strong analytical skills, and a desire to grow within a high-performing and collaborative environment.

As a successful candidate, you’ll bring a fresh, innovative perspective and a strong foundation in equity research. You’ll work closely with analysts and portfolio managers, contributing to differentiated investment strategies that help position Picton Mahoney as a leader in the asset management industry.

You’ll have the opportunity to lead and learn:

Equity Research & Analysis

  • Conduct in-depth research and analysis on public equities across various sectors and geographies.
  • Develop and present long and short investment theses in alignment with analyst and portfolio manager initiatives.
  • Build and maintain detailed financial models and perform valuation analysis.

Portfolio Monitoring & Strategic Support

  • Analyze quarterly results, earnings calls, and relevant company disclosures.
  • Stay informed on industry trends, macroeconomic developments, and geopolitical events that may influence investment decisions.
  • Monitor and assess existing portfolio holdings for changes in investment thesis.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Work closely with portfolio managers and analysts to communicate findings and investment ideas.
  • Support the broader investment team on portfolio construction, implementation, and risk monitoring.
  • Present research insights and recommendations clearly and concisely.

What we’re looking for:

  • Undergraduate or graduate degree in Business, Finance, Science or related discipline.
  • CFA designation, in the process of obtaining or equivalent.
  • 1-3 years relevant experience in equity research, investment banking or a related analytical field.
  • Solid understanding of business models, financial accounting and valuation techniques.
  • Advanced Excel and financial modeling skills.
  • Ability to articulate investment recommendations and insights.
  • Natural intellectual curiosity and a growth-oriented mindset aligned with core values of ethics and collaboration.
  • Proven capability to deliver high-quality work under tight deadlines in a highly dynamic environment.
  • Excellent time management, problem solving, and verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently while effectively Contributing to team objectives.
  • Approaches their career with a positive and growth-oriented mindset that radiates a natural passion, enthusiasm and core personal values that respect others and ethics.
  • Experience in long and short equity investment is considered an asset.
