Description

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Research Director is a senior member of CBRC’s leadership team. Working collaboratively with CBRC’s research team and external partners, the Research Director is responsible for leading the strategic development, implementation, and evaluation of CBRC’s 2S/LGBTQIA+ research program, including flagship initiatives such as Sex Now and Our Health . In partnership with the Executive Director and with CBRC research program leaders (including Associate Directors of Research, Research Scientist, Social Epidemiologist, and embedded postdoctoral fellow), they are responsible for securing sufficient funding and overall management of research grants and commitments. The Research Director also works to advance the priorities of the research program across CBRC, and support cross-departmental collaborations and relationships with other CBRC departments, including the Two-Spirit Program, Education, Knowledge Mobilization, and Policy, and Communications Departments.

Primary Job Responsibilities

• Leadership of CBRC Research Program and Operations
• Leads organization-wide research strategy development and implementation, including the evolution of CBRC Research Principles and the advancement of CBRC’s overall strategy including commitments to Truth and Reconciliation , anti-racist work , equity, and justice
• Establishes and stewards relationships with external research affiliates (university-based academics), community organizations, public health bodies, and funders to enhance and advance our research activities and organizational mandate
• Solicits and secures sufficient external funding for the research program (staff and operations), with responsibility to write funding applications and fee-for-service contracts from a variety of sources (e.g. research funders, government, foundations, other organizations)
• Leads the development and implementation of internal and external research projects, including oversight on protocols, data collection tools, recruitment materials, data management, analysis plans, outputs, and knowledge mobilization
• Ensures adherence to regulatory requirements (e.g. ethics, privacy, biosafety) for research projects, protection of CBRC’s intellectual property, and the timely completion of deliverables and reporting as per agreements
• Hires, trains, and manages a research leadership staff team (e.g. Associate Directors, Social Epidemiologist, Research Scientist, embedded postdoctoral fellows), and provides mentorship, training, and problem-solving support for research programming and operations
• Works with the Executive Director to set and manage the operational budget for the department, including financial forecasting and staff planning
• Serves on CBRC’s senior leadership team and liaises between the department and others within CBRC on collaborative projects and deliverables
• Speaks and represents the research program publicly, including presentation of CBRC research findings at conferences and with media, government officials, funders, and other external stakeholders
  
  
• Other Responsibilities
• Attends project, departmental, leadership, and all-staff meetings
• Participates in board and staff working groups and committees as needed.
• Other duties as reasonably assigned/required.
• PhD degree in health-related field such as Population or Public Health, Indigenous Studies, Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, Education, etc. Current or potential to hold an adjunct faculty appointment with a university in Canada.
• Track record of success securing large grants or contracts (i.e. >$1 million) from government, research funders, or other sources.
• Advanced quantitative research skills, including design, implementation, analysis, and reporting.
• Advanced knowledge of relevant theories and frameworks in community-based research, and population health equity work (e.g., intersectionality, minority stress theory, social ecology, syndemics, social determinants of health).
• 5-7 years of experience leading research, ideally related to 2S/LGBTQIA+ health or other health equity topics
• 5-7 years establishing and stewarding intersectoral relationships across non-profit organizations, government, academia, and/or industry
• 5-7 years of experience applying values of community-based research, equity, social justice, decolonization, Indigenization, and/or anti-oppression
• Demonstrated innovation in knowledge mobilization, for example common language reports, social media shareables, arts-based outputs, or data visualization tools.
• Demonstrated collaborative leadership experience in a diverse team-based environment
• Excellent computer skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office and online collaborative platforms such as Google workspace and Zoom as well as proven ability to learn and adapt to new software tools such as Asana, Qualtrics, RedCap, etc.
